Last night I popped the hood to check the oil and noticed the top of the air intake was missing. Can't find it anywhere, so I assume it came loose and somehow found a way out of the engine bay. Now how my wife didn't hear that happen we won't discuss. :p:rolleyes:;)

Can someone take a look at theirs for a part number? Obviously if mine fell off be careful with yours.

Or do ya'll think it doesn't matter one bit and to leave it the way it is? Considering there are two other engineered openings towards the engine bay I really wonder what the point in this complicated intake format is in the first place.

Well that's weird.

Even if it did come loose I don't see how it would make its way out of the engine bay. Did you drop the belly pan and look around?

What he said. I think it would be very hard for it to work its way out. there are very few (if any) places large enough for it to disappear through with the belly pan in place. Also, look (feel) across the top of the rear subframe member.

Well, what if his wife was driving the car with the hood open? ;)

Hmm,

Isn't that the same part that the dealers were removing (unasked) from cars during routine service in response to the intercooler freeze panic?? Which did not include Passats, BTW.

I posted then decided I shouldn't be lazy and take the skid plate and belly pan off. Boy was that fun. The guy who did my dsg service must be related to the Hulk.

Anyways I found the thing, all beat up, towards the subframe. No way I'd have found it any other way.

Wasn't a dealer as I haven't been too one in over 15,000 miles. It had to have come off some time in the last three weeks as I check the oil every other fuel up.

Though if it is the same piece that was being removed I'll likely not replace it.

Thanks. That actually helps as I wasn't able to tell what the last letter/digit was on mine.

I'm with bill here !! I think a dealer removed it out of habit due to dealing with the inter cooler icing if the golfs and jettas!!

I smashed our passat this summer. Whole new fenders, bumper, hood, rad, core support, lights, etc...

I was able to open the hood after the crashed and noticed that piece missing.

When I got the car back, the part was replace but it kept on popping off. After a couple of time pushing it back on I think I finally got it seated properly.

On a side note, that whole intake pipe is one crazy design. It gets air from the back of the engine, from the bumper and from the battery back side of the missing piece. There is also a round hole in the middle of the pipe.

Definitely one of the most unique OEM intakes I've ever seen. The round hole in the middle of the pipe is what really perplexes me.

Looks like a new cover is $5-10 based on source. Also if you google the part number boy do you find a lot of webpages talking about this stupid piece of fail. One guy had his fall into the radiator fan and take it and the radiator fuse block and fuses out. GTI's evidently have a hole in theirs and if Bill is right throwing it away was a service fix! lol. Mine just went into the trash can. Good riddance.

Holy **** do you off road that?!?! But mine is loose and wobbly too. Not even surprised it came off. Very poorly designed/engineered.

It also seems to be a universal VAG part. Tiguan TSI engines use it too. Prob, Jetta/Golf TDI's do too. GTI's were confirmed above.

MKIV's pre air filter made the most sense. It had a flapper bypass in case of ingestion.

You haven't driven Houston streets, Off road would be smoother! But poorly engineered is right on.

Ours rattled/popped loose, too - but it didn't disappear. It was just laying there waiting to be put back on.

Joy.

I keep learning things about my new TDI.

On my 02 1.8t wagon, pulling the corresponding part requires some serious heave-ho. Mind you, it isn't a two piece duct.

Guess I have found the 1002nd use for duct tape,
