I have had the MIL on my '97 Jetta TDI on for about 1500 miles. Dealership performed diasgnostic. No specific code returned, other than ECM failure. Dealer recommendation... get new ECM $1496! I have noticed a drop in performance and milage (from 500 in city to 450/425 in city). Smoke noticed ~2400 rpm instead of normal ~3200 rpm. Any ideas how to properly diagnos and fix without a $1496 ECM switch out.
Thanks.

There is a vacuum line leading to the ECU from the intake manifold. There is also a vacuum line inside the ECU, the one inside has probably weakened and the walls are collapsing under vacuum. 10mm wrench,T15 Torx, and about 3 inches of vacuum line are all you need. Had similar problem with my '97, now runs like new...

Even if you need a new engine computer, get it from www.car-parts.com

Swap it yourself, a couple hundred $$$. Use the leftover $1000 to give gifts to your self, your missus, and me.

Does the car run? If so, it's not the ECU. I'm pretty sure that the car won't function if the ECU has failed.
