Simple question..

When are other midwesterners taking their snows off?

I'm looking at the 10 day forecast and it's looking pretty good. I know it's not even March yet, however 46 and sunny next Saturday. I don't think I'm going to hold out for another snowstorm, I might go back to the all seasons next week.

Just for fun.. About when do you put them on in the fall/winter?

We have had some snow on the ground here in KC continuously since Dec 24 and today is Feb 28. I am not sure how much snow we have had this winter, but I think it is about 25-30+ inches or so.

EDIT The WDAFTV weather man just mentioned tonight @ 10pm that KCMO has had 35 inches of snow this season so far. For us, that is a lot. EDIT

Running newish Michelin all seasons on both cars and have seen no need for dedicated snow tires in our location/situation. We haven't missed any work this winter either.... :)

I pick my routes carefully.....

Michelin Energy all-season, all year 'round.

Normally take mine off 1st or 2nd week of April. I always try to wait as long as possible to put them on in the fall and it never fails that I get caught with my pants down 1 time at work and have to drive home white knuckles on my summer tires. (that have NO siping)

I'll take my snows off my silver Jetta in April. My red hot rod doesn't see snow. It is enough of a handful to drive in the rain . I only have one set of snows between the 2 cars, so when it is too bad to drive the hot rod, I hop in the Kia 4x4 beater (thanks Craigslist :p).

Not before mid March and then it depends on the weather. Right now I still have about ten inches in the yard.

The Columbus Ohio area set a record in February for snow. For you global warming kool aide drinkers, what that means is the most snow since records have been kept for this area. Last year, it was un-seasonably cold till June.

It is also supposed to snow again Tomorrow, so I would not be changing anything out just yet .......

You guys make me happy that I moved. When I lived in the mid-west (most of my life), I almost always changed out my winter tires about a week and a half before the last big snow of the year. I didn't plan it that way; it's just the way it worked out.

Have Fun!

Don

P.S. When I left Ohio, I gave away my snow shovel and my lawn mower. I haven't missed either one of them.

According to those who are looking at global warming, we should expect local warming in some areas and cooling in others, some changes may be seasonal. They also expect some years to be overall warmer while some will be colder. Likely those on both side of the issue will be in their grave before either side is proven right or wrong.

Personally I believe it is for real, but I don't see enough data to try and force my opinion on anyone.

Just commenting about the snow tire issue by looking at the climate .....er weather. So how much weather does it take to equal climate :D since that seems to be the latest BS explanation be floated ....... Btw, the only State not getting snow was Hawaii ........ oh and I wouldn't let opinions scare you ...... laws made on BS science should .......

I'll probably put my summer tires on in early April. At the very latest the day before the Dyno day I have scheduled, unless for some reason we have a freak snow storm a few days before the 10th of April:D

I'll have to agree with guz that you never know with WI weather.;)

Mine usually go on just after thanksgiving and come off sometime in March.

A couple years ago I had taken mine off and we got a 6+" snow storm on Easter - I thought, Ahh, this won't stick long, I can deal with it like everyone else who drives with all seasons do all year.

NOPE

I made it ~3 miles, turned around and went home and put my snows back on again - no way was I dealing with that crap, been spoiled too long. I've got a 2nd set of rims and a pneumatic impact so it's pretty quick for me to do it in the driveway/garage.

For me it's more the ice than snow that determines when they come off in the spring. A drizzley March day that cools off turns things icy fast makes me keep them on longer than I usually would.

I'm with 3L3M3NT for the most part.

Not until I fix the hub rings for my other wheels. Those things have been giving me headaches since I got them a few years ago. I'm just lazy ...

I went without snow tires this winter (my Dunlop Wintersports were shot) and was pleasantly surprised at how my new Michelin Primacy MXV4's handled the snow. MUCH better in snow than the previous Energy MXV4's, though the Primacies dropped a couple of mpg's due to higher rolling resistance.

Dedicated snows are still better, but I was surprised by these Primacies.

Good question here. My 10 day forecast is looking pretty stellar as well, all highs over 40F. But last year we got a nice 6" snowfall in early April here too, so I think I have to wait until at least mid-March to evaluate the upcoming weather.

However not only do I switch the wheels/tires over, I also drop my coil-overs for summer mode by about 1.5"; much more labor than just doing the wheel/tire swap alone. In previous years I have been either too lazy or too busy to get things swapped back to summer mode until late April or even early May! That really sucks, and I need to avoid it this year to preserve the tire wear on the snows... they really go quick.

Hi DZ,

I didn't take the snows off my jetta last year, but I didn't drive it much at all last year. 4-5K miles. I expect that I will take them off in early April time frame this year. By the time the snows
have melted and its warm enough to change the tires in my driveway without a coat! Right now the snows are down to only 1 ft deep in the back yard so with 40+ temps its really melting fast. Still could have a cold snap, but will
just drive my truck if its nasty out! I do want to take the TDI down to Branson Mo the 2nd weekend in April.. so I plan to swap them by then.

Drive ON!

My first season with Firestone Winterforce tires (4) absolutely loved 'em. Put them on in the beginning of December, Just snagged a set of Michelin Energy A/S, looking to swap probably at the end of the month. I am anxious to see how the Michelins will do.

Came off last weekend, good riddance! So much smoother!!! Also did a tie rod on the driver's side, think I need to do the ball joint and passenger side outer tie rod. Upper 40s and 50s this next week, WOOHOO!!!

Does anyone else think that its kind of sick when we pray for 50 degrees? I need to move west....

Came off today. I think I'm going to list my 17" Bistars (with Nokian WR rubber) for sale very soon. I just don't need them.
