TDIClub,

It is with sadness that I must announce that as of today I'll no longer be taking orders and will be shutting down. I started Midwest Light in 2013 after my personal search for HID headlights for my 2003 Jetta TDI turned up empty. This was my 10th year of a business and in that time it has been great interacting with VW owners across the country and the world (we sold headlights to owners on four continents!). Over the past decade I've had wonderful interactions with everyone, especially those on TDIClub where all this started. Be it through extended phone conversations, meetups, or providing in-home technical support in a foreign country (yes, that actually happened!), it's been awesome being a part of this community.

Admittedly, when I started making headlights in 2013, I figured it would be a brief side gig. I hoped to make some extra money to help pay for my wedding which occurred the following year. I never imagined I would still be doing it a decade later. Back then I was a single young guy with lots of time on my hands. Fast forward 10 years and I've got a wife, one kid with another on the way, a house, and a lot more responsibility than I did back then. As I've progressed in life, free time has been harder to come by, as I'm sure many if not all of you know. My son, who is the best thing that has happened to me, has autism. And to be totally honest, being a parent to an autistic child takes an incredible amount of time and energy. As he's grown these past few years I've found it increasingly difficult to keep up with making headlights. And more recently I have not been able to maintain the quality of customer service that I think you all deserve. And so, it seems that it's the right time to step away.

As of now, anyone who had an outstanding order should have received a refund. If you believe you are still owed a refund, please send me an email at jeff.rudzinski@gmail.com. All warranties will remain in effect, so if you purchased a set of lights, ballasts, or bulbs recently, those warranties will be honored. I plan to continue offering technical support for the foreseeable future (several years at least). TDIClub has been great to me, so sometime in the next couple months I plan to film tutorials on how to make my headlights so that all you DIY folks can take a stab at it with the help of the things I've learned over the past 10 years of building lights. I also have several sets of headlight housings (non-retrofitted) that I'll be posting in the for sale section that will be free. I plan to keep a stash of HID parts for warranty purposes, but whatever is remaining I will be giving away to TDIClub members as well. I have numerous sets of HID and LED projectors that won't be used, so look out for those in the next few weeks.

I really value having been a part of this community ever since I got my Jetta in 2010. I wish I could continue with headlights, but as they say, nothing lasts forever and life moves forward.

With Immense gratitude,

Jeff

Solid!
Good guy - really did a lot to help ensure the product he delivered was great quality.

Having worked with a number of autistic kids over the years, it can certainly be challenging. But they're also some of the sweetest kids I've encountered.
All the best on the Dadding front - and whatever else comes your way!

Take a look at one of the walk-throughs that @KrashDH has done on building up his headlights. He definitely takes the process and fit-finish-performance to a top-notch level.

If you're serious about giving it a try, look for an old headlight on FB or CL, then take it apart and do a dry run with that - that way, your car isn't out of commission while you figure things out.

Basic steps:
  • pop the headlight into the oven at 200°F for 8minutes to soften up the butyl adhesive
    • this allows you to remove the lens with minimal fuss
  • mount your retrofit projector (take your pick at Amazon or Aliexpress)
    • (haven't looked, but there have got to be dozens of YT videos showing people doing this on various cars' lights)
  • Secure it, check alignment
  • Lock it down
  • Replace lens, put back in the oven to soften up the butyl again
    • replace the hold-together clips

I recently built some for my car. Was easier than I thought it would be. These are the parts I used.

I bought 35W ballasts , h4 high/low harness and h1 4500k bulbs. After the headlight is heated and the lens is separated the h1 projectors bolt right in (as long as you use euro headlights). I used this video for guidance
