It appears you can replace your 10mm pump head with an 11mm pump head on your 1.9 TDI without removing the pump or buying a entire unit. Just plop it in there for around $140 bucks. Any comments on that?

I'm not sure who is claiming you can just "plop" it on there but they may have just gotten realiy lucky. There are lots of parts in there that can also just "plop" out all over the front of your engine. You definitely want to remove your pump for major surgery like that and possibly even put the 11mm head on a spare just in case things go antarctic on you.

Well those were my words. Maybe a slight exaggeration. Some youtube videos I saw looked like you could just take the pump body off and replace it with the 11mm. Without removing the entire pump.

You can't "just take the pump body off and replace it" either. As Jim said there're a lot of parts that'll fall out of place.

First there's the little shim, then the cam plate, then the four rollers and their axles.

There's a thread where a member pulled the pump head and used a wire to hold the guts in place. I don't remember if he put it in before pulling it or if he put everything back in place and used the wire to hold them during assembly. Not sure who it was and don't want to mention the wrong name. Maybe he'll chime in.

There are just too many to list....
Just roll the car on to the passenger side. A forklift, an F250, heck even a couple sturdy fat chicks will do the job... it's a small car. Use a mattress to keep from scratching the paint. Also, be sure to fold the passenger side mirror in beforehand. Best to do this with a mostly empty tank of fuel, too, and be sure nothing is in the cupholders inside.

KLXD,

That was me that used a piece of wire to hold the pump internals in place when I removed the head:

I had the pump out of the car, but you could also do the same with the pump in the car.

I just did that pump swap on my car, I lifted the drive side up and used a small amount of petroleum based camshaft brake in lube so kind of tack the pieces in place upon reassembly, it’s a bit of a pain and I should’ve just done the entire unit

Thanks for the reply . Im pretty sure it was possible . Thats why I posted the thread. Im sure someone has succeeded at this. Otherwise wouldnt you have to take the timing belt off to remove the pump etc. Im sure theres a certain degree of difficulty involved either way. In my situation I want to add a 11mm IP to my 1.9 TDI . Whats easier remove the pump and and replace with a 11mm pump head. Or leave the pump on and replace with a 11mm pump head ?

Removing the pump head makes reassembly a bit easier because you can see how everything is lining up when you reassemble the pump, when I did mine I used a small screwdriver to hold the cam plate in place while I put the pump into position

I ended up having to replace the pump anyway, but as long as you make timing marks and get your pump to TDC before removing it it comes back together quite nicely
