I had to sit in traffic on Monday so I filled the tank a bit early. I was also eager to see what kind of mileage I was getting. Trip was up and down hills but I ended at roughly the same elevation I started at.

I dont see any figures in here for a New Beetle. Any ideas if mileage would tend to be better or worse than a Jetta/

Usually worse. Less aerodynamic.

I recently drove from Walla Walla Washington to New London New Hampshire, with a backpacking trip to the canyonlands thrown in, here are the majority of the miles...5 mph actual over posted limit, except in 75 zones when we drove 75 (77-78 mph indicated).
Car was loaded with approximate 850 lbs payload.

For scooperhsd's ease:

This tank had driving that included 40 miles on extremely rough dirt roads in the canyonlands of Utah (aluminum plate worth it's weight in gold) in first and second gear in addition to a lot of elevation change, at one point reaching 9,980 feet (I was scared for the turbo's life) on some crazy road in central Utah.

Miles: 750.0
Gallons: 14.355

-------
TRIP MPG = 51.27, TRIP AVG Fuel Price: $4.49/US Gal, never thought I'd say that!
A good trip and I'm very pleased with the car's economy at or above posted speed limits.

Any ideas on how much less aero the Beetle is to the Jetta and what about the weight savings,(beetle I believe is 300lbs lighter) what does that equate to in actual mileage, if you or anyone knows.

thanx for the help

The weight savings would only come into play with non-highway driving. Unsure if the worse aero negates it though.

I'm thinking the NB gets a few less MPG.

I commute almost 50 miles to work, 90% freeway. I drive about the speed limit in the right lane, always a bit slower than the lane next to me. I've been using engine off rolling a bit more, keep momentum and a large buffer ahead- but other than that nothing too radical as far as economy driving. Weather has been cool but otherwise good except for two thunderstorms.

This is my all out best (to date) effort and my first full fuel tank with the .658 5th gear. My last "best" was 833 mile per tank with stock gearing. Lots of P&G, neutral coasting, turn off at long stop lights/timing lights....

1st 800 mile tank! Woot!
Mainly 70mph indicated commuting with a little stop and go. Also flooring it in 3rd or 4th when safe.

Well, I thought I wouldn't fill up again this month. Then decided I needed to make a couple of road trips to get mod parts for my RV. So, I have to add another one to those in post #47. First trip was to New Braunfels, about 400 miles RT. Second was to DFW area, about 400 miles RT. Hopefully, this will really be the last one this month!

I wasn't going to fill, but saw a Shell station that was still $4.49 where the rest of the places on the block had jumped to $4.65. This station is always a day behind the others in price increases.......

This is my record high, b.t.w. Conservation techniques are working well.

Trip computer claims 70.3 imperial mpg, which is another record for me. Another tank using P&G, and another tank qualifying for the 900 mile club. To realise why I am so insufferably pleased about this, for several years I was doing 45mpg imperial tanks every time, 95mph on the motorway, and then (10 months ago) I got this car which had a trip computer, but was otherwise identical to the previous... 45mpg to 70mpg is a big change, particularly when the only significant difference is the driving style.

The weather was (mostly) warmer, between 12 and 20 centigrade. The effect of the weather clearly results in better MPG for the warmer days.

Incidentally this tank cost £ 74.86, which is about $ 149. 125.9 pence per litre which is roughly $ 9.52 per us gallon?? (Or have I miscalculated?)
