Okay, here it is... quite possibly the highest mileage 2003 I've ever seen... and the odo is stuck here, trip still works... tracking mileage with the 2000 mile marks on the trip odo.

sorry for the large photo... hopefully it will show up correctly...
if not...

Any ideas on making it move again? already tried vagtacho and vagcom methods...

oh and a gigameter is the getting close to the diameter of the sun... and a million kilometers or... 10^9

Wow. That is pretty awesome. You should still have about 12 -13 miles left before the 1,000,000 km mark. How many miles of those are yours?

it's actually closer to 650,000 miles ( a little over...) the trip odo is mine since sunday.

I was just thinking a 1,000,000 KM = 621,371.192 miles so your odo should have gone a bit higher before it stopped at 999,999 km.

I'll have to do a scan again and look at the actual value stored...

at least the trip odo works.

now does this constitute beyond mechanical limits?

That was an A3 thing, not a VW thi....ummm....idiosyncracy, that's a better word.
A VW Thing would be the Kubelwagen:p

The B4 of the same era don't revert back to zero after 300,000 units (miles in the USelessA, Km in Canukistan apparently) the way the A3 do.

Still, the coincidence of 621,000 miles being so close to a million Km is enough to make the association plausible.

you should tell vw and maybe they'll put in in their museum one day. At least they may want to give you a better odometer that can count higher like this guys's 240D that got 4.6 million KM.

I happen to own a 240D, and I can assure you the tachometer does not go to 4.6 million kilometers. As a matter of fact, the odometer/speedometer has broken two times. It fails far more often than the engine, which is still running strong. We have lost track of mileage though. It is somewhere between 400K-500K miles, I presume.

If I recode to read KM (canada) in the instrument cluster it reads all 9's (999,999)

The odometer could technically go to 655350 miles before running out of a way to store the value in the cluster but I guess they limit it to 999,999km's which is why your miles stopped early.

All gone
If the user storage area for the ODO is in an unsigned packed decimal format, the limit makes perfect sense.

999999 requires 3 bytes of stroage, or 4 bytes if signed: 0999999F.

3 bytes in binary format would be FFFFFF, or 16.78 million.

the adaptable value is 65535 (X10 km), that's a limitation of adapting (two byte), there could be an artificial limit in place in the programming so it doesn't "roll over".

Once it goes past 655350km, I doubt you will be able to readapt (even with vagtacho), but it will still count upwards

I guess they had to find a way to do it with only a 16 bit counter. The least significant digit is calculated/stored differently then the other digits in the odometer

The adaptation is only 16 bits, I'm sure it's a 24 bit or a 32 bit value, but has a max value of 999,999 for the counter loop. The trip odo still works, so at least I can keep track of it.

Sorry, its all only 16 bit. I can show you the cluster eeprom files if you want to see exactly how its done/stored/calculated.

I've got the carfax and autocheck and it shows a consistant 100,000 mile increase year over year, stopping at the 628k mile mark...

If you can show how it's done, stored, calculated that would be great, maybe I can modify it for a rollover scenario.

I will see if I can find a file I can share this evening. Or if you find one jcrews post it somewhere and I will tell you the stored mileage and how I got it.

So the odometer doesn't go over 621358 miles ???

Car's obviously a lemon...

Yuri

(I guess our 2003 is only just broken-in at 618990 km...)
