Posted this on the frontier club forum but no response so I thought I'd try here. The TDI owners seem to be a bit more engaged then frontier owners.

"Had a snowstorm a few weeks ago and drove about 15 miles in 4wd high at around 40mph. After that been having trouble getting it into reverse. Changed the transmission fluid which actually seemed to help for a couple trips and now the problem is back. Any ideas? All the other gears shift smoothly- goes in and out of 4wd no problem."

Is a manual or automatic? I I had a 2006 Xterra with a manual and drove in 4WD hi for like 150km at 100KPH and didn’t have a problem. If it’s an auto I’d look into changing the filter. That could be causing your problems. If it’s a manual then you may be losing your reverse gear.

Its a manual. I dont think its related to 4WD just a coincidence thats when it first started to majorly act up . Shop seems to think its the clutch and quoted me 1600 on a replacement but Im not convinced that will fix and dont wanna be stuck with a 4k rebuild. I changed the gear oil to GL5 thinking that might help to switch it up a bit and it did at first but its back doing the same thing now. Its weird how sometimes dropping to 4 low and then back to 2 and rocking back and forth will eventually get it in reverse. Not sure how long that will be the case though.

What symptoms do you get going into reverse? Just wont go in, grinds, notchy getting it in, but no grinds, ect.
If its your clutch I would imagine the engine would lug down some when you put it in first hear because the clutch would be trying to move the truck forward, but can't. In which case it would be lightly dragging the clutch on the flywheel.
