I’m in the market to purchase another TDI and I’m looking for a manual NMS Passat. There are next to none available for sale nationwide on Autotrader and cars.com. Were they not eligible for fixing during “dieselgate?” Did they not produce as many as I’m thinking they did? Or is everyone holding onto theres?

There are just too many to list....
Most of the CKRA+manuals got bought back and crushed. That just leaves the CVCA+manuals, which is 2015 only. And yes, they are quite rare. There are a handful of CKRA cars out there that the owners hung on to, but not many. And they were rare to begin with. Sad, because there really were not many 50 MPG mid-sized sedans you could buy, but the EPA wanted "clean air" so they were verboten. You can buy as many 12 MPG Suburbans as you like, though. Those are perfectly fine.

While pretty much equally as rare, there were a few 2.5L gasser NMS Passats sold with manuals (5sp). While they won't knock down the MPGs the TDIs do, they are a far less troublesome engine, run well (170hp), and will tag 30-35 MPGs on the highway and only require the less expensive regular gasoline.

Damn, I was afraid of that. Thanks for the info. I couldn’t find it anywhere on the internet and knew someone here would know.

Well they help keep me busy. Probably one of the least reliable 4 cyl TDI we ever got.

Common CKRA issues:

turbochargers (doing one right now... they had a warranty extension on them before the whole Dieselgate thing, and they ran out of replacements for a while, with some cars waiting over a year for a replacement!)

oil filter housing (made of plastic, spontaneous explosive loss of coolant is common, usually on a first cold snap... there are fortunately aluminum aftermarket replacements)

camshaft seals (TSB about this, really stupid design, need a special tool to remove them, and another to install them, although I go back in with a "regular" type seal instead)

valve covers (again, plastic.... they bake themselves to the head and leak oil all over)

the SCR system (tank, pump, heater, again parts shortages happen from time to time)

injectors (can be just mild 'nailing' during warm up under load, but can progress to bad nailing and misfires and cylinder contribution being flagged)

clogged heater cores (due to too aggressive of low pressure EGR duty cycle literally boiling the additives out of the coolant in the EGR cooler... this can progress to gunk up the whole cooling system, which is VERY complex although not nearly as excessive as the CVCA is).

NMS issues not related to the engine:

The Chinese made HVAC motors, some of which require dash removal.

Compliance bushings on the front control arms.

They are hard on the inside edges of the tires, much MUCH worse the bigger the rim size.

Rear calipers can stick, usually due to improper (no) parking brake use.

Front rotors warp, usually from the above.

Melted DRL bulb sockets. (easily perma-fixed)

...when they are all dialed in, and running correctly, they are a nice car. Good power, roomy, understated conservative styling, excellent fuel economy. But I'd never want to rely on one as my only means of transportation, no way no how.

Also CKRA can be hit or miss on the parts failing. Some users only have to do basic maintenance while others just replace all of what oilhammer just listed.

Mine is just the Turbo twice (Upgraded to a Garret on the second) and the oil cooler so far (it's plastic but will switch to the metal one if it fails again).

I think a big issue with the CKRA issues is the complex emissions system. Once you do the weight loss, it seems a lot of the issues subside...

If I pull the trigger on one, I would explore weight loss.

You will have better luck finding a 2015 manual transmission than a 2012-2014.

If you do find a 12-14, once deleted. It will run super great as it didn't get the fix.

What is the life expectancy you’ve seen with CKRAs still on the road?
I've got a customer with one of the rare ckra manuals, he's over 530k miles now and still the original engine. Turbo was replaced once, oil cooler twice, and fuel system once.

No injector replacements? Mine are quitting at 150k!
