Malfunctioning odometer: ramifications?

I now realize this may not be the right category but...

I finally figured out my odometer is not working correctly. It indicates 3,371 then 3,372 and 3,373, then it falls back to 3,371, and repeats the process. I think the car has about 4,000 miles on it now, judging by the miles until service function. If I report this to the dealer, it will flag the mileage of the car as being unknown. Now I wonder what that will that do to my re-sale value. It will be a negative, for sure but, how negative?

I plan to keep the car but if I am forced to sell it for what ever reason this will impact the value.

If I were looking at purchasing a used car and the mileage was known to be incorrect I would expect a discount. In these days of car fax and such, it will be made known. I hate to take a hit for something that is not my fault. When something is my fault I "man up" but this is different. This might be a legal problem, I think. I would appreciate your best advice. Thanks

I believe on newer VWs the mileage is stored in the instrument cluster and also in the ECM. So, I don't believe there will be any issues with the mileage being flagged as unknown. The dealer can replace the instrument cluster and then adapt the new cluster to the ECM and enter the correct mileage.

I checked my mileage this morning with VCDS and there is a 4 mile difference between the odometer mileage and the VCDS reported mileage. I currently have 42k+ miles on car. So the difference is slightly less than 0.01%. I believe the ECM calculates the mileage based on integrating speed over time.
