Magnetic Oil Pan Drain Plug

Every TDI should have one of these inexpensive aftermarket plugs to help prevent tiny particles of ferrous metal and debris from being recirculated in your oil system.

Part #10.115.401K at only $3.50 each fits all TDI oil pans according to Autotech Sport Tuning. Size - M14 x 1.5

Definetly a good idea, too bad they weren't OEM. You can wrap you OEM steel plug with a wad of copper wire and hook it up to six volt battery for one hour to electromagnetically transform you stock plug into a magnetic one permanently too.

I see this in aviation. Folks will tape magnets to the outside of the oil filter for the same effect. (Obviously we are taking pistion engines here.)

Steve, that is what oil filters are for!!! And besides any LARGE shavings will sink right to the bottom of oil pan where they will remain.

Ric:

We're basically talking about the small tiny particles that are abrasive in nature. I guarantee you that even with a bypass filtration system, a magnetic drain plug will still have some particles adhearing to it each oil change - just like an automatic transmission oil pan's magnet will be covered with a thick abrasive substance.

Besides, this is only for positively charged optimists!
At $3.50, it seems that prevention is better than redemption!

Seems like a good idea to me. Aren't there other ways of magnetizing a piece of metal - eg, rubbing on another magnet? With the filter method, you just take off the magnets and throw away the filter, I guess. This wouldn't work with our drop-in cartridges though.

As an aside, if you want to put in an oil temp sending unit, you don't have to use the drain plug - there's apparently a plug that screws out of the oil filter base.

Karl, anything that realign the electrons will magnatize ferrous metals. You can temporarily magnetize a screwdriver by tapping it with another object. A degausing coil ($30.00) works well. It will Magnetize or demag, plugs into 110, it's a large coil near the size of a toilet seat, with a switch on the cord. You can make one with some copper wire and electrical tape. My favorite use is demagging agitated customers who would come in on the full moon when I was tending bar. It seemed to work! They aught to keep them in emergency rooms.

I used to take apart old computer hard drives (especially those really large, physically, ones) and the magnets they used to drive the head assembly were really something. If you got two of them stuck together, good luck getting them apart. I am going to take another one apart and will place the magnets on my oil filter.

The OEM Audi drain plugs have the magnetic insert ...you can buy one at any Audi dealer for less than $10.00. It does pick up all the tiny bits of ferrous materials - I have one on my 1990 Audi 100, 2.3L 5 cylinder. It has the same 19 mm hex head on the plug ....

On my old TR4A I had a large loudspeaker magnet on the sump underside. At oil drain time, I used to take off the magnet and all the little snurgles would run out with the oil.
