MAF Sensor failed with screens out - will dealer do warranty?

My dealer diagnosed my check engine light as a failed MAF sensor. The dealer doesn't know that I removed the screens. How should I handle it?

Would the EGR buster eliminate this problem?

Thanks.

Maybe the braindead service tech will not notice. You could say, "Sceens, what sceens? You mean they left the screens out? No wonder it failed!"
but that would be dishonest, there is no way to explain this honestly. I have never recommended removing them. I have never seen a Gtech result before and after screen removal, I am not saying there is none, just I am not willing to try it.
Epsilon cannot help you on this one, what kind of filter were you using?

Has the air filter been properly installed the whole time? If so, then removing the screens had nothing to do with the failure. I don't consider it "dishonest" to play dumb in that case, since the dealer and VW will have no qualms about weaseling out of their responsibilities by any means available, fair or foul. If it's broke, it ain't your fault! VW should pay. Give it a try. What's the worst that could happen? Hell? That's where all the really cool people will be anyway.

The air filter has been a properly installed K&N since the de-screening. The dealer has agreed to replace it (no hassle), saying that this is not the first MAF to fail.

Thanks for your help.

Sugz, I am glad it turned out well for you. It's not the first one that has had problems with a K$N either.

Car has been running shaky today, low power, stumbling, etc, struggling to accelerate, after a week of a new Tbelt and the best performance the car has ever given me. I have used genuine VW paper filters except for the last 2k with a pipercross panel filter, which I credit with providing great low end punch. Checked MAF screen inside the airbox tonight and it is quite sooty. It's also never been cleaned in 40k. I am going to clean it tomorrow, results to follow. Hope it doesn't need replacement :\

Just for sh*ts and grins, I disconnected my MAF and took my car for a spin. I have Upsolute, and I'm used to the extra punch it provides. I would have to say that with the MAF disconnected power and accelleration was below stock. I think if you had a problem with your MAF you would have a CEL on. As soon as I took off, my CEL came on. I brought it home, connected it back up and had a friend clear the CEL.
