Need luggage rack for extended road trip - is the VW brand recommended (it's awfully expensive)? What about a Thule? Any do's/don'ts you can pass along?

Both the Thule (this is probably what the VW is, anyway) and the Yakima are excellent.

I might make the choice based on the nearest dealer, price, and/or accessories.

I have sold/installed both. The Yakima is a US company.

I've got the VW rack on my Jetta and although I've thought of the Thule rack, with it's faring in front, I have never regretted buying the OEM. I use mine mainly for hauling stuff (rocking chairs, boxes, luggage, etc) and use two ventilated shelves purchased from Home Depot, wired together and bungee-corded to the roof rack. Then I can bungee-cord the items to the rack very securely. I would recommend painting the shelving because the white really stands out (against my black Jetta).
