I am looking to cash in the 2006 Jetta TDI and move into a 2012 Passat TDI. Can anyone help me understand the differences between the NEW TDI and the BRM PD I have now? Has there been improvements to:

flywheel? (I replaced mine at 90k)
Cam? cam wear is notorious on the BRM, even with great oil.
I think I read the timing belt is 130k now (?)

Any insight from 2012 Passat owners? Remote starter work well? Fender sound system, etc?.....

Thanks for any reply

wow...that's a loaded question. You would be best served by searching the 2012 Passat forum. Many of your questions are answered there.
Enjoy your reading.
Quick answers: flywheel problems? unknown..not enough high-mileage cars yet
Cam? see previous answer
Timing belt is 120k.
Remote starter is silly, because you have to turn the car off to open the door to get in...I'm sure it's a security thing, so no one drives off with your car. I will never use it anyway, as I'm anal and like to listen to my car at start-up.
Fender System: I'm a classical musician, and can't afford a great auto sound system, so I only listen to Sirius "Radio Classics", or the usual far-right, far-left offerings of Fox, MSNBC, NPR.

Seriously, though, do your own reading here, rather than start another thread. This site is getting very cluttered with repetitive information, and the search function, already marginal at best, becomes less useful.

(East China? Where in the US do you live? Downtown San Fran?)

As MyAvocation said, it is a CR motor not a PD so that is a big difference. Beyond that other than the 120K timing belt everything else is a WAG because they haven't been out long enough. I probably have one of the higher mileage cars at 23K and it has been running like a champ with just a couple minor issues since I bought it in September.

I have mine for a 2 weeks now, and when going through service manual, it shows 130 k for timing belt.

My question is, does anyone have a rear spoiler installed? if so, can one see it backing up to know where the tail end of the car is at. Any pics?

I have the manual, and on a recent 75 mile trip, each way, staying at 65, I was able to get 54 mpg. Thats with my tires at 40 lbs. Winter fuel, and a not yet broken in engine. Can't wait for summer fuel. :)

thanks, Gary

I traded my 06 Jetta Tdi for a 2012 Passat Tdi Sel. I loved my Jetta. I had to replace a pulley for the belts and drivers door wiring harness and some sort of boot on the cv joint all at about 75k miles. This was pretty expensive through the dealer and I decided with some reluctance to trade it in before the 90k timing belt replacement. They gave me far more than I thought they would (bought in 2005). I was really nervous because I liked the car so much. I can say without a doubt the Passat is a much better car. Lots more room, a little better mileage, lots more power, smoother ride, etc. Take the plunge.....you will not be sorry, I promise. Try to get one without the Hankook tires. They were so noisy that I took it to my local tire shop and got them to trade them in on some Continental DWS's and it made a dramatic difference in the noise in the cabin. They come with Bridgestone's as well, so insist you get those, even if you have to get them to swap them from another car. There is a learning curve with all the gadgets, but once you get used to how to work them, they are easy to use and very worthwhile. That is mainly on the Sel model, which I recommend if you can stretch your $ just a little. I got the second one that came in to the dealership. Now that they have been out for a while, the service dept. will be more familiar with the gadgets. I spent a couple of afternoons in the service department with the techs, calling Chattanooga trying to figure out how all that stuff worked. Once we got a grip on it, it is really, really nice to have those extra convenience options. Go for the Sel. Every day you drive it, you will be smiling!!!
