My Opinion

I think the Jetti series are a-ok. I have a Jetti Sport Wagon TDI, 2010 with 98000 miles and love the vehicle. The reason some say the maintenance is expensive is that the VW dealers are quite expensive, if you go by the book for all the maint. service. In my opinion that's over kill. Take for instance a standard oil change. My VW dealer charges in excess of $50.00, but the shop I go to just charges $36.00. I am sold on the VW diesel engines as they are very peppy and give great road mileage. On the road I get 41+ and all around average better than 36.

Are you certain the shop is using the correct oil? $36 per oil change doesn't even cover the costs for the correct oil and filter.

Totally agree about the dealerships though. The idiots at Desert VW wanted something like $600 for the 40000 mile service interval, after overfilling my crankcase on all three of the "free" oil changes. I laughed in the service managers face.

For what it is worth, we have both a 2013 Forester (wife) and my Jetta TDI sedan. I love both cars, but for very different reasons.

We also like to do outdoorsy things and with two daughters, the Forester really is the 'family car' for these purposes. Any local weekend getaway, in fact, we take the Foz. Great in winter for ski trips and with the cargo carrier on top, we really have very little issue with space.

The Jetta serves as my daily driver, but we also use it for getting to and fro when we don't need to bring days worth of luggage or gear. Softball game? Jetta. Family 5K? Jetta. Any excuse that I can find to drive the Jetta I will because it is fun to drive, comfortable to ride in, and of course, great on fuel.

Tough choice given your situation - but both are solid options. We had to settle on a minivan years ago...I don't miss that thing at all! :)
