Looking for a rebuild kit for 02J 5 speed tranny

Pulled my sons 5 speed manual from his ‘03 Jetta with the ALH motor. Car has 360-370,000 on it, and we are getting some interesting noises that seem to go away when clutch is pushed in. Couple problems shifting, 3rd gear synchros don’t hold.
So, we pulled the tranny. Wondering where to find a rebuild kit for it? Clutch looks good, throw out bearing is a little suspect.
Pretty sure it is the 02J tranny, but don’t know how to be sure?
Thanks for any help.

There are just too many to list....
They really don't normally sell "kits" for those. You just buy the individual pieces you need.

Thanks for the reply.
Where would one find the individual pieces?
We are way out of town and it is a real pain not having the parts right here to use as needed or not.

There are "kits" available, but nothing is comprehensive. You may want to replace parts that aren't included in the "kit."

IME I ended up getting another gearbox because to do what you’re asking required buying the individual synchro gears and the service tools to do it along with pressing the gears off and on again. All this got pretty expensive when added up and I didn’t want my first attempt to somehow fail.
YMMV, of course. But from what I remember the costs were pretty close so just got another, lower mileage one.

Watch the videos in this thread, almost the same as rebuilding an 02j. And yes you have an 02j.

Thanks for all the info. Looks like we would be better off with a replacement tranny.
Apparently a little hard to find these days, but I did contact Fans at Dutch auto parts on a suggestion here.
He has a rebuilt unit available.
Anyone have any issues getting these from him, either with the unit itself, or with getting it delivered here? Thanks

I ordered a rebuilt one from him. I had no issues at all. It was delivered via box truck to my driveway by FedEx if I remember correctly. The transmission looked brand new.

One of the best references for our trannies. Zelek.com Sometimes they have the kits. But there are some schematics with part numbers. Break downs of gears for different models. Check it out if you are going to crack open your trans.

The problem is if the whole trans is either worn out or suffered some catastrophic failure they are usually not worth rebuilding. The parts are extremely expensive from VW. Depending what is wrong you can steal stuff from a gasser trans and fix it. I suspect most "rebuilt" units you find are just a bearing swap and replace any syncros/hubs that are obviously worn out.

Just the bearings alone are in the $150 range.

The transaxle has 1/4-1/2” of side to side play currently. Did some more looking around, for rebuilt, Frans is half the cost of Cascade. Now to allocate the funds….

Matt-98AHU on the forum does rebuilds (already mentioned in this thread). He answers forum messages. I don't know his rates for routine rebuilds.
