Looks like the big thing to look for is to see if the "BSM mod" has been done. This is converting from chain driven to gear driven correct? What exactly am I looking for? I did a youtube search to try to hear the difference in noise but it was hard the tell a difference for me.

Car has 140K and is at the dealer for $8k.

Anything else I should be looking for? I will be taking the Vag-com and do a thourough look at everything.

If you were to hear a geared one next to it you would hear the difference in a hurry!
Night and day!
I was like you when I bought mine listening to all the u tube things and head scratching.
I just said to myself best to go ahead and deal with it and ordered the factory geared module kit for $1360 and installed it.
Car is smooth and real quiet now and a pleasure to drive.
My timing belt was aready new when I bought mine but I did have a motor mount showing the red dye leak so I changed out both of them as well

Well they won't take a trade on a 2wd truck (the excursion this would be replacing). So this is on hold for a while.

That said, any difference in sitting style/comfort in a B5.5 bs MKIV Jetta? What about head room.

No comparison between a B5.5 and MKIV. Passat wins hands down on power, ride, size and handling. MKIV only has one thing better and that is MPG. Small sacrifice IMHO

Mine has turned into a bit of a money pit & I wouldn't give it up for anything! I paid a little more than what I really should've, but it's black on black, which is what I was looking for. Did the BSM & now I'm getting all the parts together for a trans swap to a proper trans. I have an '03 Jetta wagon, which is really nice, but it can't hold a candle to the Passat. Especially with a good tune!

You are looking for a receipt that provides proof that the job was done correctly.

I have a Mk IV Jetta and a Passat, Love the fuel mileage of my Jetta (Passat is a gasser for now) but the Passat is SO MUCH nicer ride! That is why I am looking at converting my gasser to TDI/6spd.
