Locked keys in trunk

Well not really, but it can happen.

I noticed that if you simply unlock the trunk the doors do not unlock at the same time, so if you did drop your keys in the trunk while unloading packages that you just bought and slammed the trunk lid shut...you are s**t out of luck.

How would you get into the car and is there a fix for this other than not locking the keys in the trunk.

I thought i read once that there was a sensor that would pop the trunk if that happened. Try it sometime by leaving the other key in the house and see if anything happens.

you can get a key cut without the chip or programming and wire it up under the car somewhere. that would let you get into the driver door and then open the trunk.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I'll post what I come up with and what works.

2002 TDI (ALH) with 513,000 km. First Owner and very happy... No Problems, never left us stranded on the Highway. Average useage is about between under 4 ltr. and 5 ltr. Normal longdistance travel: 4.1/100
It happened to my wife, so - the Club Emergency Service showed up and she travels no with a spare Key!

If you have CarNet, you can use the service to unlock the doors and then access the trunk. Otherwise, a spare key-only could do the trick.

Easy work-around; don't throw keys into the trunk. Or just unlock all the doors.
Yup, I already stated that in my opening post and I don't throw them in the trunk on purpose. Unfortunately, I don't use checklists in my Jetta as I do on aircraft. :D

And the issue would be solved if they eliminated the trunk button on the remote altogether.

Silly programming on VW's part.

Seems like I read my Passat won't latch the trunk when it senses the keys inside the trunk. Just bounces back open I think. Maybe the Jetta has something like this?

Someone else mentioned that a few posts further up.

I never put the key in the trunk, but had it in my hand. It was locked after closing the trunk lid.

I do not think it works like the key-less entry system that the model up with a push button start has.

I can say for sure that on my '13 Passat, the trunk will lock, with the key in it, unfortunately... :(

Speaking from experience? That is what I was afraid of. That can be a real b****r when you are far away from home.

Yes. I wasn't the culprit, but I had to suffer the aftermath...

Setting your keys down in the trunk is just asking for trouble... in any car.

Hey 993er
I actually have used this to my advantage in the past. Ill go out and throw my keys in the trunk and then use Carnet to get me back in. Nice for those occasions you don't want the bulk of your keys with you.

I made this mistake before. My doors were unlocked - manual trunk. So I had to flip the rear seat back and pull subwoofers, luggage etc out. Took me about half an hour. Lesson learned.

You realize that a trunk unlock button has been standard on almost EVERY remote entry car for like 20 years, right? My old '98 Jetta had it -- I just made sure not to lock the keys in the trunk lol.

So have I, so far.

There is a reason why we use a checklist in the cockpit. I'm not about to on a silly car where mistakes aren't as critical, just inconvenient.

I tried to lock the keys in the trunk because that's what I was worried about. What I did was lock all doors and left the drivers window down, just in case. Anyways the trunk pops open on mine if the keys are in there and the doors are locked. Unless I'm missing something here.

That is likely because you have a High Line Jetta with keyless entry and start.

It won't work if you have this VW key fob.

As someone already mentioned, VW has had these buttons on their remotes for 20 years. Just because it's there doesn't mean you have to use it. It's not silly programming. The silliness is with the operator. :D
