Hi, ok I am reading a lot all forum posts. I have 2012 JSW TDI DSG I love my car, using this car for work. Lots of stop and go, like 10 or more engine starts per day, lots of idling, lots of traffic (Atlanta area) shorts trips, but over 100 miles a day. Looks like that TDI I am just damaging reading all this post (dpf, no idle speed and other things). That you think guys maybe I need to sell my car before all problems gonna start to show. But I am in love with VW TDI and I don't want to sell and I don't want spending thousands $ on repairs. Thanks.

Just drive it. I have 107k on my '09 DSG. Probably 50/50 mix of highway and nyc/jersey/philly traffic.

There is a lot of good information on this website. The posts about what may happen to any of our cars are enough to scare you into walking, if you don't look at them with a critical eye. Everyone likes to gripe about problems and on here you can get people that will help you fix most of them. However, there are some that want to make sure you share their pain.

I drive lots of stop and go. I try to get one good long drive in a week, whether it helps or not. Nice thing - I really like that ride, so I look forward to it either way.

Relax, Learn and Enjoy driving your car.

I think you'll do fine. The system can still regen at idle and it will automatically resume a regen if you interrupt it with one of your frequent stops. Make sure to venture onto the highway from time to time to stretch its legs.

I have similar type of driving during the week and I am about 3 hours on the road each day. I have an 09 that I bought in Apr 09. I do try to take my car for extended drives in the mountains once a month or so. So far close to 40k no major issues...

dont worry ...it seems to be part of being on the site...tough day? get on the Club and complain about your soft paint, tough starts, lousy additives, poor mileage, fuel system that never broke, and on and on and on....last time I checked Diesels were DESIGNED for the kind of driving you do to get great efficiency. Just drove to north Bay ontario, snowing, 386 kms....car ran beautifully from toronto...always does but now I worry cause 100 people on Freds come on to ***** every night??....so I laugh and drive some more.

Yet another vote for don't sweat it - at 10 engine starts a day most of those are "hot" starts anyway. And 100 miles a day is plenty of mileage - like others have said, you aren't causing any harm. Let the car do its job, have fun doing yours, and enjoy driving the best value, best-made diesel new diesel vehicle you can put your hands on. That's what I do!!

Oh yeah, give all the "issues" proper perspective, and take with the appropriate amount of salt. Helps immensely to cut through the gloom and doom ;)

Thanks GraniteRooster, that's what I am doing, enjoying, I really liked JSW. When I live in Europe I was driving other diesel (Renault Laguna) but this new VW rocks!

DON'T BE DELUDED!! Many forumites will tell you that your car is a hand grenade about to explode, and VWOA will stand on the sidelines laughing and counting what was formerly your money!!! SELL IT! SELL IT NOW! In fact, i'll take it off your hands for half for what you paid for it, just because that's the kind of guy I am....:D

Keep in mind if you look at any technical related internet board for any given car, you will walk away thinking they are the biggest pieces of crap ever. While they may clue you in to common potential problems....HPFP, intercooler icing, etc for us for example....just because they are highly talked about problems doesnt mean that they are imminent on all cars. Some of it may be luck of the draw as well I think...like in my experience, some of the cars I have owned with the poorest reputations have been the best most problem free cars I have had oddly enough. If you really like the car, dont let the internet or reputation scare you away. Let the warranty be your grace period for really deciding...that way whatever happens is covered for a few years, and if it does turn out to be a problem child, then move on when that is up and it really becomes your problem to contend with.

If you drive just right, like the experts say it will last 1,000,000 miles... driving it like you do, it will last 900,000 miles.... get my point. Get the car you like and drive it as YOU NEED to serve your needs.... These are not garage queens, driven only on Sunday. Use it, enjoy it and stop reading too much from the experts.

Clearly the car is ideal for open road, gets better millage at constant freeway speed.... blah blah blah... who cares. You can't change the traffic.

PS there is no crystal ball to tell you when to get rid of a car. This has been an age old debate. If you are going for return on investment, you buy a late model high quality USED car and drive it into the ground... 10 years, 20 years.... I did that with both my Acura Legends and THEY WERE STILL going strong.... Some people buy a new car every few years or lease cars. If money is no object, then you would sell your car (VW) every 3 years or 36,000 miles (ie in warranty) to have low risk. There is NO TELLING when something BIG will let loose. Being VW and "German" they cost more to own than a Hyundai, Kia, Ford... etc.

PSS when an internet expert says Blah blah this will happen if you do this..... read for proof, data, evidence, facts.... most of it is opinion. Even the "testimonials" and "it happened to me" and "a friend of mine..." have very low credibility or just not relevant, too small of a sample. Don't get me wrong, I have opinions I like sharing, and like a broken analog clock, I am right twice a day.

Finally a thread where nobody (so far) has advised the OP to sell.

Perhaps this place is making progress. :)

We initially bought ours for the wife. She loved the car, I loved the diesel. We take it tonight for the 90 day check (I wouldn't bother except one vent is broke and I imagine I'll get a free wash)

We have appx 2100 miles on it. The majority on 4 trips we have taken. The point is, my wife doesn't drive that much. The TDI doesn't really fit for the purpose we bought it for. I love driving it though. So much so that my wife is getting pissed at me.

If I take the TDI to run an errand I have to leave her my truck and she hates driving a standard. So.......we are going to check out a lease on a Beetle tonight when we take the car in for it's 90 day service. If we can work something out I'll drive the TDI full time (I have around a 45 mile work round trip) get a hitch and a trailer and sell the truck.

I've read the doom and gloom but I certainly hope we can find her something she likes. (She likes the Fiat 500 also but there are no local dealers)

Hey I'm closer so I get first dibs if he wants to sell for pennys on the dollar:p

I had a 97 ford windstar that was suppoed to have tranny and gasket issues from day one. I traded it in 2003 with 125000 miles with the original tranny and gaskets. Head gasket was starting to drip coolant on the oxygen sensor which meant that the check engine light was only off long enough to pass the state inspection. If you paid attention to all the posts on Edmunds and Consumer Reports, I should have never made it through the first year without a complete rebuild.

Amen. And this is coming from someone who had a complete transmission failure on a 2011 at 14K miles.

I still love the hell out of this car and I'm coming back into the camp of I would never trade it in for another kind of vehicle.

I will second the occasional long stretches on the road only because of some of the DPF issues I have heard. Even then, just take a nice long drive on one of your days off to stretch the car's "legs" and clean it out. Hit one of the on ramps to an expressway hard now and then to keep the turbo flaps clear and you should be good to go.
