I thought a nice list summarizing every failure reported here could maybe be useful to some people here for myriad reasons. I'll use the following format:

User:
Car:
Location:
Build Date:
Failure Date:
Mileage: (at time of failure)
Failed HFPF Part Number: (try and get this at the dealership - see sample below)
Failed HFPF Build Date: (see sample below)
New HFPF Part Number:
New HFPF Build Date:
Outcome: (Warranty, insurance, or out-of-pocket?)
Link to Thread

This is a sample a member posted of his HFPF part number(s) and build date

BOSCH 011
0 445 010 508
CR/CP4S1/R35/20
03L 130 755 A
01 170809 <- supplier (?), date of production (ddmmyy)
BPT0442
0007

This list is the product of many people's contributions, and they are all appreciated! Please post if you see more failure threads, and I'll update the list. Also, for those of you in the US, please report your failure to NHTSA. Then the issue can get more attention like it has in the article posted here: http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=292279

One last note: This thread is for listing failures only, not for discussions. Moderators regularly do housekeeping here to keep discussion out of it. Thanks.

Adding my 924827 cents worth

Using the format provided by the lead post here is my story:

User: MonicaC
Car:2010 JSW TDI
Location: Knoxville Tennessee
Build:Where would I find the build date? I took delivery on 11/5/09
Failure: 6/2/2010
Mileage at failure: 8,076
Outcome: Negotiated with my own insurance company. They paid from my comprehensive coverage [less my deductible, of course]. Total bill with labor was: $9248.27

My insurance company tested the fuel in the tank. It was diesel and it was not contaminated. I have pictures of the system as they pulled it apart and I have all the parts [except the tank] in my garage.

Both my insurance company and I are very interested in possibly going after someone else [hint hint VW] to pay us back if it is a failure of design.

Keeping my eyes and ears open.

Build Date-early 09 Sportswagen DSG TDI

VW is paying for new fuel system. I am going to sell the car as soon as I get it back. I do not want to worry about it failing again.

This thread is to be used as a listing of people who have had fuel pump failures. There are numerous other open threads for discussion of the issue.

Please consult the FAQ on this issue that is stickied at the top of the MkV and MkVI sections, as well as the numerous other threads on this topic.

So of the 24 listed to date, the majority are 2009 cars, and most of the 2010 models have 2009 build dates (or when build date is unavailable, seem likely to be 2009 build based on mileage and date of failure). I only see one that is a confirmed 2010 build car. Granted that this is still a very limited sample, that could be significant.

I've been asked by a few members to keep this as a list only thread, not a place for discussion. There's plenty of other threads on this issue that we can have discussion on, so I'm going to prune anything that's not a listing of a failure.

Going forward, please keep this thread free of discussion. Please consult the HPFP FAQ that is stickied at the top of the MkV and MkVI forums, use the search function, and then if you can't find the answer to your inquiry in one of those threads, or at least a thread to post the question in, please start a new thread.

Thanks!

Remove mine

initial diagnosis was an error.

Problem turned out to be a bad/broken wire to an injector sending fuel pressure errors. Wire was replaced by vw under warranty quickly.

Been driving it for a few weeks and no issues.

It still put my family in danger on a busy highway in la, but it was not a hpfp failure.

Sorry for the false alarm. I jumped the gun.

None if VW has its way
8/24/10 add mine to the list
Approx. 57k miles, purchased in No. California from the first roll out Summer '08.
No warning signs
Repairs quoted at ~$6k. Have extended warranty, but they're arguing the fuel filter is wear and tear part.

Will update

An '05 MBZ E-320 CDI (W-211) replaced the '10 TDI JSW
Questions . .

:)

Is your vehicle a TDI four banger like our Jettas/Golfs or does it have the six cylinder engine?

Have you been using biodiesel or perhaps any additives?

VW would not cover the repairs needed?

Repairs which involved? Details please?

Sorry for all of these questions, but yours is the first I've heard about from 'down-under.'

:D

ACC: Does your 08 in Australia have the same "new" TDI engine we have here in North America? Was it the high pressure fuel pump that failed or some other pump?

Car lost power on the freeway. Maintained enough speed to get me 7 miles closer to home and then stalled at a light. Towed to dealer who said "Fuel Contamination" and "Parts are not readily available, so a few weeks to replace entire fuel system". Now driving a Jeep Patriot :( which leads me to believe the terrorists have won.

Tiguan
Another TDI pump failure

Tiguan is 4 Cylinder diesel - appears to be similar to what is fitted to Golfs and Jettas here. Don't know if it is the same as US. Specs -

Engine 2.0 TDI 103kW
Type 4 cylinder inline turbo direct
injection diesel
Installation Front transverse
Cubic capacity, L/cc 2.0 / 1968
Bore/stoke, mm 81.0 / 95.
Max power, kW @ rpm 103 @ 4200
Max torque, Nm @ rpm 320 @ 1750 - 2500
Compression ratio 16.5:1
Fuel system Bosch EDC 17 common rail
Emission level Euro 5 Fuel type (Recommended) Diesel 51CZ

Failure of high pressure fuel pump, fuel distributor, injectors VW believe to be due to fuel contamination - seeking second opinion. Haven't used bio diesel or additives. Has been good car other than this!

The whole idea of contaminated fuel, IMNSHO, is bogus, without backing proof. If mine failed, I would be taking them to the races with a whole battery of questions and they seem to set you up to try and prove a negative. But that is neither here nor there.

So far, at > 13,000 miles, I have not had a lick of issues with the HFPF. But I decided to go and add the info off of the sticker on my HFPF (2010 CJAA engine):

BOSCH 011
0 445 010 508
CR/CP4S1/R35/20
03L 130 755 A
01 170809 <- supplier (?), date of production (ddmmyy)
BPT0442
0007

For the good of group - Two items are missing from most of the posts: 1) the build date of the car; 2) The info off of the HPFP sticker which has a possible date code present (may be date of build) and the most important The difference in my date code to date of car manufacture is a bit short of two months. This info is always good when doing forensic analysis (one of my jobs at where I work) and building up patterns and possibilities.

So, if a member has a HPFP goe toes up, get ALL the info off of the white sticker on the failed HPFP and the replacement HPFP and post it.

That's a great suggestion! Getting these dates will be a challenge though, as you can see with the build dates...

So I got bit... driving down I-280 in the bay area, forgot to fill up near home so stopped at Woodside Chevron and put in a whole tank. Driving normally (actually improved mileage in the last few weeks, though it's due to actually checking my air pressure, d'oh!) up till then. Leaving the station to the I-280 onramp I though I started to hear a very slight noise, but it was so faint I wasn't sure it wasn't the radio or road, about 3/4 mile to the onramp. Get up to highway speed and the glow plug light starts blinking yellow, and the MFD says "Engine Malfunction: Get to the workshop" or something similar. Call dealer, says that if it's still driving (limp mode at this point, seemingly normal operation other than the rev limiter) just drive it in (10ish miles to the dealer). Doublechecked that I had the receipt saying I put in diesel.

After a couple hills on 280 the car started to buffet pretty hard when trying to go up the hill (like shuddering), but kept going and smoothed out on the flats/downhills. No other lights on the dash other than the blinking glow plug. Get to the offramp to the dealer, come to a stop at the stoplight and the engine dies completely, no struggle, just like I turned off the key when it came to a stop. Cranked ok, but didn't even burp. Called roadside assistance, they came a while later (thankfully little traffic and I didn't cause a backup, despite blocking a lane in front of the light... didn't want to try and push it through the 7 lanes and potentially get hit), brought it to the dealer (which was only about 10 blocks away at this point), who checked it in... got the call later that day that it was contamination in the fuel system caused by the factory, and that VW said to replace the entire fuel system.

Interesting how they said it was caused by the factory on a car that's at least 1-2 years old...

"Caused by the factory".....what does that mean in relation to a contaminated fuel system? Defective pump?

what I find even more interesting then that is this is also about as clear cut of an example of actual fuel contamination as you can get. I mean he didnt do anything wrong if he used the correct diesel pump and has the reciept stating diesel...it is clearly bad stuff in the stations tank....but yeah, that is a pretty clear example of fuel contamination if I ever saw one. Then VW says factory and not owners fault which just takes the cake (but dont get me wrong, I think it should be covered either way). heh.

It boggles my mind how much variation there is between these cases in terms of outcomes.

Are all of these denials of factory coverage backed by fuel analysis tests or what?

More info on Diesel fuel in US

When I asked my buddy who is a Amsoil dealer, he investigated and found this article.

Craig,

Read over the pasted post below. Have you seen it before, that VW is aware that fuel in US doesn't meet Bosch's fuel spec. reccommendations?

Got some feelers out myself. Here I have pasted in a post that I happen to read, and pasted it under this. It seems to echo our feelings regarding lubricity. Post follows:

Maybe the OP should sue ASTM while he's at it. It's well known that they have ignored Bosch's (and other DFIE manufacturer's) recommendations on fuel lubricity. There are a few threads about it here if you do a search - one in particular has a lot of info about lubricity and its effects on DFIE.

To satisfy my own curiousity on this issue, I did a google search on "VW TDI HPFP failure Europe" and oddly enough there wasn't a single hit in the first two pages that referred to any european cars having this issue. I came across one post on TDIClub where someone alluded to a handful of failures in Germany.

European diesel fuel (manufactured to EN590) has a lubricity level in line with the recommendation of the DFIE manufacturers, American fuel (manufactured to ASTM D975) does not.

So to summarise, I would blame ASTM as much for this issue (if it indeed it is an issue) as VW/Bosch.
