So to summarise, I would blame ASTM as much for this issue (if it indeed it is an issue) as VW/Bosch.

Cant say I agree with that much. Our fuel standard is what it is. It's not like one standard was promised then all the sudden after vehicles are produced, SURPRISE, here's a lower quality. I just dont see how one can place any blame on an existing standard other then acknowledging that is the cause. It's VW's fault for using the part and claiming it is fine on our standard even though Bosch says it really isnt. In my 2011's manual, it says right in black and white to use ASTM 975 fuel. I just dont see how one can place blame even partially much less equally on a standard when VW says use this fuel and in reality the part they provided doesnt do well with said fuel. My 2 cents.

what I find even more interesting then that is this is also about as clear cut of an example of actual fuel contamination as you can get. I mean he didnt do anything wrong if he used the correct diesel pump and has the reciept stating diesel...it is clearly bad stuff in the stations tank....but yeah, that is a pretty clear example of fuel contamination if I ever saw one. Then VW says factory and not owners fault which just takes the cake (but dont get me wrong, I think it should be covered either way). heh.
I find this theory to be highly unlikely. This station is in a very affluent semi-rural area (read: big fancy Ford diesels for their "farms") and is one of the only diesel stations within 5-10 miles, it goes through a lot of traffic, if it were genuinely "contaminated" fuel there would have been a lot more fuss. For it to have been contamination with new fuel going into the tank it would have had to have happened over about 3/4 of a mile with a slight downhill trend, which is a very short distance to use up all the fuel already in the lines. The dealer service rep used the term "contamination from the factory", implying that VW is admitting it was a factory problem, but implying that it was a manufacturing error that introduced contaminants, not a design defect (which is actually the case is up for debate).

Is anyone aware of any reported HPFP failures in Canada?

'10 Golf 2dr 6m, sold.
I'm not sure where my list is,but the styrofoam cup test is just one of the standard VW fuel test.The techs are highly trained to detect even the slightest contaminates. Here are the top 10 determining reasons for declaring contaminated fuel.
1) looks funny.
2)doesn't smell like diesel
3)water in fuel
4)sediment in fuel
5)gasoline in fuel (when there isn't any)
6)bio diesel sticker on bumper
7)funny color
8)additives
9)something
10) ect.

The above list according to some VW dealers are enough to get your warranty denied.

I don't see "It don't taste like deisel....I mean Diesel" on your list.

Update: got the car back today, and seems to be running normally. Here's what it said on the receipt thing (typos are sic):

Found code P0087 per TSB 01-10-11 Removed fuel filter and found metal shavings checked for fuel contamination non found. Per tech line due to metal shavings recommend replacing the fuel system. Replaced fuel lines, fuel injector, fuel filter, fuel pump, cleared faults and set basic settings road tested vehicle and it working as designed

And the stuff replaced:
1x 03L-130-321 - Pipe
1x 03L-130-301 - Pipe
1x 03L-130-089 - Fuel Distr
1x 5N0-130-307-J - Pipe
1x 1K0-127-400-F - Fuelfilter
1x 03L-130-235-K - Pipe
4x 03L-130-277-A - Injectunit
1x 03L-130-301-R - Pipe
1x 03L-130-301-B - Pipe
1x 1K0-201-060-GP - Tank
1x 5N0-906-129-B - Fuel pump
1x 03L-130-755-A - Pump
1x 03L-130-301-C - Pipe
1x 1K0-919-050-J - Fuel unit
1x 1K0-253-141-M - Clamp

The service rep said she would try to get the old pump part number but the tech who took it out had already gone home, I'll try to follow up tomorrow. Good service, all things considering, Stevens Creek VW in San Jose. No connection to them, would recommend for dealer needs.

Was the repair covered under Warranty?
