Got 4 18" Michelin tires, about $850. Same price as Tire Rack. With the leftover money ordered the Dieseldubs intake manifold flap fix I have been wanting for a while. Worst part was the two hour wait at the dealer. It was partly my fault since I went on a Saturday.

Is anybody considering purchase of a replacement HPFP? With mine at 145K, that's pretty high on my list.

Doubt you can buy either at the VW dealer with the VW card. :(
Indeed you're right. Too bad since nothing that the dealer offers parts wise can compare.

Why am I pushing these solutions?
You probably already know...
Because after 120k miles VW washes their collective hands of any high pressure fuel pump failures. That puts the ball solely on the car's owner. You might be able to get vwoa to cover some of the costs. But very few have reported any success with this happening to them.

So what if you replace the current hpfp with a new one from the dealer?
For starters the new part is covered by a 12month or 12k mile warranty. This may or may not be covered if the owner installed the pump. Best advice is to have the dealer install it if you go this route.

Which again points to the best solution being from 2micron.
If the pump dies with the 2micron filter kit in place only the pump would need to be replaced.
With the CP3 pump you'll have one of the most reliable pumps on the market.

You could always worry less and drive more :p

And, why replace a HPFP that is designed poorly with the same part. It makes no sense...

A couple reasons I could think of.

Millions of HPFP's are running without issue in the VW platform. Airplane crashes don't keep people from flying simply because they don't crash very often. Same principle here. The vast majority will have no problem with this but it really sucks if you do. I was simply trying to get a feel for PM-ing the item since it would appear from what I have read that the design life for the pump is around 150K miles.

The proposed alternative is an experiment and has not been demonstrated to have a lower failure rate than the incumbent pump. And demonstrating that is impossible in the VW platform. You just don't have the ability to produce that many. From the thread, it appears to be a pump used on a Diesel pickup. I think the real question here should be, why would you take the risk of installing an unproven device that requires extensive modifications to even bolt on the engine? Even car manufacturers cannot make reliability conclusions until they actually put a few million into the field. It's a guess until that happens.

I don't want to just waste the $500 I have to spend with VW on something useless or unneeded. Even if I wished to, I couldn't buy either proposed item with the VW card.

For those that wish to, I sincerely applaud your creativity. I just don't see the point of replacing an item that works well for 99+% of the fleet with an unknown that may or may not perform as well. You may have a vast improvement here. And again, maybe not. It's a personal preference and isn't for me. I'll stick with what is known before delving into the unknown. Better the devil you know . . .

Wishlist from dealer with the 'dealerbucks' (have yet to activate the cards.. should get on that soon :p )

Battery for the TDI
Four glow plugs for the TDI
Front rotors for my GLI (will they service any VW with the VW dealer card?)

Visa bucks will be for 80k on the TDI; ff, dsg, lof, probably rear brakes too.

I think the number is closer to 93-95%. As the cars age the number of cars with failed pumps goes up. Admittedly I am proving the point of the 150k mile life span of the OEM hpfp. There have also been pumps that fail well before then. I think there were a few under 30k miles.

That said, the CP3 pump has been proven in the cars & trucks that it's installed on. It is again one of the most reliable pumps for diesel engines at the moment. It is also more efficient at pumping diesel fuel. Several people have reported mpg gains of 3-5mpg.

ATR can you provide me with the link for where it talks about the price of the kit for the CP3 as well as details.

I'm not talking about the long forum thread, just simply the thread where the seller of the kit is advertising.

Thanks

I already did indirectly in post #34. It's the first link that shows installs of the CP3 pump by forum members. The first post in that thread links to Andrew's initial thread regarding the CP3 install:
http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=367804

I'll more directly answer the question... currently there is no CP3 public price since it's still a bit early and Andrew is still working on patents and such to bring it to the public.
If you'd like more info or would like to be a early owner contact 2micron (Andrew) directly here:

Hey, where do you take the cards to get them activated? Service department or dealer area? Those are widely separated at my dealer, so I'd like to know where to go first. :)

...and at my dealer it was at the service department. Therefore, you probably ought to call before you go. It obviously could be sales or it could be service.

Have Fun!

The first dealer I called didn't have anyone that could activate the cards because it was on a weekend.

So yes it is a good idea to call first.

Neither. Just go to the front desk and ask them.

When I got mine activated, a manager came up and got the verification docs and took them into the management office and had them activated. Didn't take long.
