If you want a Syncro system... why not just buy my Golf Country already converted to a TDI and save yourself a lot of work!?

no way. i would never settle for that tiny little bit of ground clearance! 9.5" is my minimum! i don't agree with body lifts :D i'm sure you understand. & i'm not made of $$$. & i don't trust people to know how to build something tough enough for me to drive. & i don't think the rod shift syncro transmission will hold up to a modded TDI. & it would be a pain to register. & i want a 2-door. & i know how to do a conversion. or maybe to sum it up... i know exactly what i want & i'm going to have it! nobody has what i want so i will build it. & you can watch here as it unfolds :)

My Golf Country (which is stock except the engine and gearbox) has a Rallye Golf gearbox... 12mm pump... but hey I understand about a real 4x4s I own many... Rabbits are for kids!

If you want a real 4x4 you should check out my Syncro Westfalia with the R-TDI (say 18+ inches clearance) or for total brute strength my LT 4x4 - but if you don't trust people on how to build stuff then I don't want you near my stuff as I have no idea what I am doing ...

Didn't want to be offensive fast forward. sorry if it came out that way. i'm just ver fixed on what i want to have as my final product & it was strange to hear "why not buy..." but i understand. i thing golf country's are really cool... but that body lift type subframe irks me. i wouldn't mind having one though. they look cool - would be awesome parked in my driveway. :) & i'm glad to hear you traded out the trans. so... that westy sounds really cool! 18" huh? at the lowest point? i'm really curious to see this! do you have a link? & i am very fermiliar with offroading. that's why i'm lifting my golf. i don't really get a thrill out of street triving like i do offroad. i grew up going out camping with my dad in his willys - now that's a real offroad beast! his current ride is a 1967 kaiser M-715. we are working on the details to get it fitted with a cumins 5.9L. this thing has 36" tires stock & will fit 40" tires with no lift! & i hope to build a Full Size Cherokee Chief with M-715 fenders, bumper & brushguard. it will be sitting on Unimog Axles & have a cummins 5.9L as well as 44" super swampers. Of course these tires are nearly as cool as the 52" Michelens that wil get installed on my dad's truck though. :) but i'm not really needing a truck at this time... the golf is being built to be a great daily driver. efficient & fast & able to conquer almost anything I should come across in my travels. :) So the idea with the golf is 100% funcionality based. The cool factor just happens to come up when a car is this strange. anyhow... that wesy camper seems really sweet - i would like to see it... & i like the country build... it's very cool too. i'm just looking for a slightly different final product. & i love the challenge that comes with building these things.

what engine mounts did you use?

hey, I have a MK4 tdi that I drive everyday, but Im thinking about converting an 88 cabriolet to a 1.9 tdi, so I was wondering how do
you mount the engine in there, I guess maybe the mk3 engine goes in
the mk2 easier. however, the extra tdi engine I have is mk4

A 1Z / AHU engine code from the 95 - 97 Passat and 97 - 99 Jetta will have the same mounting points as the engine in the Cabriolet. The later engines will fit, but you really have to start a lot of custom fabrication at that point.

Yeah... like he said. now for some more fun.
This weekend we left The bay eria at 9:00 pm friday night & headed north... slept in shasta for about 4 hours & then proceeded to drive to portland... at about 92mph average & the little mk2 TDI still got 44mpg!!! I could barely believe it! & then we picked up the goods.

& the car only sat down this low with 2 full syncro swaps inside!!!

& we went & had it weighed!! =) the 2,000 lb car weighed in at 3600lbs!!!
it was 1850lbs rear & 1750lbs front!!!! then we started our trip back at about 3:45 saturday afternoon & wanted to make good time so we ... ummm... I'm not going to say ... made good time & we made it to about 10 miles in to California when we spotted the CHP Officer with his radar gun right at us! :( I was worried this was goint to be the end of my driver's licence! The officer came up & told us we were stopped for speeding... then asked us about where the dash was... i told him it was at home Then i told him it's getting hard to find another because of how old the car is... he said "I can relate" ... Turns out he has an Audi 100 & likes the older VAG Vehicles quite a bit! we chatted for a bit & i told him about the ticket i got a few weeks ago for having no front plate, and how i havn't had time to put it on yet... & when it was all done we drove away with a fix-it ticket for the front plate... that's it!!! The coolest cop ever!!!
so then we went on our way... & the poor tires had benn flogged the whole time & decided to let us know

I guess they don't like being loaded so much & going so fast!

So the Tow truck came...

& towed us the last 72 miles home...

& for all you efficiency lover... even while beating the crap out of the car with a 1600lb load it got 43mpg!!! (maybe around 100mph... shhhhhh don't tell)
& the hottest the EGT's got wat 1050 deg F. this was while doing just shy of 100 up a 7% grade making 18Lbs of boost for 9 miles! & the oil temp got to 110deg C I guess that's not bad considering the load! syncro will be great! It just needs a peloquin & some gearing changes first, as well as some powder coating & some new seals, bushings, bearings... You get the idea.

funny what a man will do for his VW :D

Man I wish I had had some time to hang.
I just dropped my spare 5speed off for a peloquin install and taller 5th and a general rebuild..... Cant wait.
Hope to see you at some of the shows next summer with the swap complete!

No drive to B.C. I went to Portland... or really Oregon City... Jman on VWvortex brings in shipments of stuff from germany... made us a real good deal & i just had to go get that stuff! :) He might be getting another large shipment of goods in January. Contact him (Jman ... Vortex) if you want to place an order... :) I think we need more Syncro cars in America!

I'm not sure at this point. I bet if you were to hop on VWVortex & IM Jman he would be able to direct you to someone who does or maybe even ship something right ot you. I have also seen quite a few syncro passat's going up for sale at really low proces in eastern Canada. Maybe someone there would be willing to part one out for you. I'm not sure how rusty that might be though.

Thanks Frankencar! I sent him a message...

OBTW did you get a trans to go with those rear drive set-ups? That Golf can haul a lot of weight!

Great golf

I love it! I have been thinking of doing something like this on our 87 jetta TD. We live on remote property accessed by gravel (logging) roads which are maintained. Its a little rough on any vehicle, but not unrealistic for a car. The biggest obstacle is snow and the lack of ground clearance the jetta has. This is a daily driver, and must be reliable, but I can't afford to go wild with modifications, nor do I expect to use the car as an "off road" machine. Looking for sugestions/ comments. I have heard of using passat springs on jetta struts. I'm currious if this is true, what year of passat springs, and what kind of height increase this would provide. Also, any other/ better suggestions. On your car, it sounds like you used the passat struts and springs. Is this correct? thanks in advance for any feedback.

Frankencar : I agree with you about the TDI Syncros but, due to the high power our North American TDI's got, not sure how well a 90hp stock TDI would work in a heavier passat.

In Europe, they did have mk3 Golf Syncro with the 90hp but not sure about the Passat.

Interesting question! Does the addition of the rear drive train add much resistance and would you therefore expect a sluggish response from a TDI powered syncro compared to a 2WD version?

I just sumbled in here by accident but this is pretty cool. I'm most impressed with the grill bars skidplate set. wher did yo get it, what did you atach it to and I wonder there is something like this for an A4.

I saw ths same model and age car on campus 2 weeks ago with a similar lift. I actually looked at it under the car (in the parking lot) and couldn't see how they got it that hihg. They had alot more clearance between the tire and fender than yours, though. (Isn't that a problem with shock travel for you?)

They had a home made square tube grill guard that they had bolted a spare tire too. I thpought it was pretty rugged looking.

The interior was totally trashed and stripped, but nothing's perfect, right?

Well it's quite simple actually. I used the entire spring/shock assy from a b3 passat in the rear. just drill 2 extra holes to hold the funny passat upper spring perch.

In the front i cut the welds off the section of the strut tube (mk2 with insert) that holds the wheel bearing housing. I then slid this part down about 3/4" & rewelded it before reinstalling the inserts & then fitting b3 passat front springs for a total of about 3.7" of lift.:D
