I thought my 'new to me' 2005 TDI passat(109.200mi) had an oil leak. But upon further inspection- I realized that it is the seal on the left cv axle. I have yet to locate a tranmission dipstick on this thing. wondering if it might be getting low. I doesn't appear to leak when driving- judging by the cleanliness of the under side. But everytime I stop is leaves a small puddle. The shaft appears to 'bolt' together, like it has a yolk out of the transaxle. Are these seals hard to replace? any write up, or how to's?

I have searched autozone for the parts- but they don't even show the part available...

I have looked all over for a way to gauge or add transmission fluid. I don't see anything!

Unfortunately there's no way to check fluid level other than pull the fill plug and even then there's a very specific procedure for checking trans fluid level.

suggest you buy the Bentley manual which will not only explain the procedure for stub axle seal replacement but also show transmission servicing as well. left side is very different from right, for example. it will be money well spent

unfortunately the bentley is about 100 bucks, but you might save making mistakes that would cost much more.

There are just too many to list....
You know the differential has its own lube supply on that transmission seperate from the actual gearset, right? Are you leaking ATF or hypoid oil?

The paper Bentley does not have the TDI B5, but the transmission bits in this case are the same as the gas cars.

This is a ZF 5HP-19FL transmission, if that helps you find some online data. Sometimes the carrier bearings get the crap beat out of them from Chinese axles, and when this happens, the seals leak.

Mine has a leak in the same spot. VW vortex has a fix it article. Since mine has high km I decided to top it up once a month until something else breaks in the area. This site already has good tips on how to fill it, do a search.

Diagnosing the leak cost me a power steering hose. The fluid is the same color and sprays up onto the ps hose. I did the hose along with the chainectomy so it was easier to get at.
