LED Reverse Lights, Now no Windows!

So I got some LED's for my reverse lights, installed same. The fob no longer works the central locking, and my windows won't work.

The fob, both of them, show the flashing red light, and worked perfectly until I tested the new reverse globes, which worked just fine. I promptly
took out the LED's and reinstalled the incandescents, but no joy.

I'm hoping that whatever error the LED's caused will be be self-correcting,
but after a day and 3 or 4 starts, the problems remain. Car runs fine, lights all work, but now the rear hatch will not lock at all, although the gas cap release still works. The driver's door will lock with the key, but I have to manually lock the other three doors. And the rear hatch is now manual only, and will not lock at all, even with the key.

Haven't been game to even try the sunroof, it being below freezing at the moment, and the interior lights don't work at all. Incidentally they are all LEDs,
already installed when I got the car ~10k ago.

Any ideas folks?

2002 MkIV Golf, GLS.

Just taking a wild guess here, but if all of your problems happened when you installed the led lights well maybe they cause some sort of short in the ccm?

Scan with vcds or test with multimeter. Until then it's all guesses.

Jokila,

I put the old bulbs back in as soon as I realised I had issues, but no luck.

sandmansans,

No VCDS on hand at the moment, I'll have to bite the bullet and buy a cable
from RossTech. I tried a cheaper version off Ebay, but haven't got it to
work properly yet.

Thanks for the input.
Cheers!

Check the fuses for the central convenience system, there's a couple near the actual unit around the brake/gas pedal as well.

When I bought my car it had all LED's tail and reverse lights.... I took them out right away because they were not bright enough. I dont know how the previous owner didnt get in a car accident. One of the key fobs that came with the car also didn't work when I got the car, I dont know if it was related or not. I have since switched to incandescent bulbs and have had no problems since......and people can see when im hitting the brakes.

Why buy a cable when you can get some help from a local yokel?

I never had a problem in my '05 Golf with the LED's; interior and exterior except for the turn signals. I bought them all from superbrightleds.com. Checking fuse #14 is all I can think of.

Check fuses 14, and 38 in the side of dash box. There are two more fuses in the thirteenfold relay fuse panel under the dash fuses 111, 144 there.

If the rear latch will not lock the car will not activate the alarm but should still operate the doors. I suspect the latch issue is mechanical, a broken latch. Coincidental but they do break.

Hey pdq, it's been a while since I've own or tinkered with an mk4, but I thought the trunk release was controlled by the ccm? Or am I wrong.

Thanks gents for the fuse #'s, I'll give them a check in the morning.
Cold and snowy here, with icy roads, didn't venture out today.

I'm guessing a software issue, re-installing the original incandescent bulbs has
them working fine. The LED's are generics and only $6 for a pair, not the much priceyier offerings. My reasoning is that if they'd blown a fuse somewhere, they wouldn't be working at all.

One post on CanBus about whether or not one had it, was that if you don't have
a "light out" CEL light on the instrument display meant that the vehicle doesn't have it programmed in the ccm, (computer control module).

All doors and windows and alarms are on the ccm. They are monitored by the CAN.

I misread and thought the trunk latch would not shut, they do break that way occasionally. Locking is independent of latching on that model if I remember correctly and controlled by ccm regardless.

We have all missed stating the obvious and common failure on all models. That is the trunk/hatch wiring harness wires break under the tape and disconnect or short together. I kinda forgot about that problem too.

Gents,

I am pleased to report that the culprit was Fuse #14, a 10amp mini, symbol of an overhead light on the list in the driver's side dash fuse box.

Thanks to all for your inputs, I'll p/u a set of the various amperages and be sure
to have them onboard for future reference.

Cheers!

Glad to hear it worked out to be a simple fix!

My trusted mechanic thinks it was simply coincidence that the LED
reverse lights installation happened at the same time the fuse blew.

I'll grab a couple of the 10amp minis and give it another go, at least if
it happens again I'll be ready for it. Funny that the lights worked just fine,
maybe I shorted something while fiddling with the bulbs,,,, dunno'.

The LED's do throw more light, the interiors are almost too bright, and I
replaced the city light bulbs in the high beams with some blue LEDs.
With my euro style headlight switch I now have what I've always called
"parking lights" on all four corners for daylight running. The stock DRLs,
the low beam headlight at 80%, still come on with the switch in the off
position, first click gives me the parkers/city lights.

I'd love to find the base bulb fitting for the original fog lights that I do have
a lens for in my headlight assembly. And I have an intermittent fault on the
passenger door, sometimes it lights up the interiors on opening. I have tried
to clean up the striking point on the latch but with only partial success. Spending the time and effort on taking the door apart to get at the assembly
for a thorough clean or replacement is not on the list of priorities at the moment,
especially with the temps well below freezing.

Cheers!

So spare fuses in hand, I once again swapped out my backup incandescent
bulbs with some LED's.

Bingo! No problems. Light up fine, I'll get a better sense of how much better
they are once it gets dark. The originals were a bit anemic. The new ones are
a 7W with a projector lens off Ebay for the princely sum of $6.

And on the bright side, I've now got an assortment of fuses.

Cheers all!

Ps. Backups are appreciably improved, brighter and whiter, huzzah!
