Found the problem...

Well, congrats to all who were thinking it was the head gasket, because that's what it was...all the symptoms I was experiencing were related to the head gasket...but for me the fun doesn't stop there :(

My Lamentations:
When Marty (JeTAAH) took the head off he found the leak in the gasket, but he also found damage from the past that I didn't know about. His guess is that the timeing belt must have slipped a notch or something like that. He found bent valve rods. The valves were still sealing, so that's why I never noticed any loss of power or any other symptoms. It looks like the slip was most likely caused by a bad tensioner...the one that was on the car dates to 1999, so it was probably changed in 2000.

Anyway, when the car does come back it will have a brand new head (it cost the same to buy a new one than to refurbish the old one) and TB tensioner, so I'm planning on putting another 190k on it! :)

Thanks to all who helped with ideas.
