Mk6...? As far as I'm aware, you can match the remote to the car with VCDS, but dealer-level tools (ODIS) are required to match new keys to the immobilizer system for start authorization.

Why not get the blank cut, and swap it into your existing fob. You keep the electronics intact, no programming necessary.
I still need a second key as the car only has one. Is it easier to program 2 completely new keys or can is swap stuff from one and have the second programmed for the immobilizer?

Thats so frustrating that its this way. Youd think if you can program the remote buttons you could also do the immobilizer matching.

One is a simple operational convenience feature... the other is a reasonably sophisticated anti-theft system specifically designed to be tough for a car thief to bypass.

And that's probably how we all want it... except when we lose a key ourselves. :)

Vagtacho can do this

use VCDS to match the keys to the BCM aswell so you can have your keyless entry.
if you have push start then this is more complicated..

Vagtacho interface is very expensive. I could pay the locksmith to do what it will cost for the interface. Regular blade key to start. Unless somehow i can use that software with my vagcom cable then ill give it a shot!

Of course! I bought the car as a salvage so it came with only one key. Wish i had the valet key as well. Comes in handy for tubing adventures cuz i can get those wet!

Ugh so the place i looked at getting keys from is apparently very unreliable. Any suggestions for an online place that will cut keys and mail to me so i can have dealer program? Local locksmith said he wont touch a vw. Wonderful

Do you know if the old trick for the MK3 era cars where you put the working key in the ignition on (not running) and would use the new key in the drivers door and lock the door for a few seconds then unlock it? (or something like that.) I did that once or twice.

No idea. I know it worked on the Mk4 cars, and Ross-Tech's (VCDS maker) page on doing that procedure was last updated in 2010, so....there's a chance.

So i got new keys from fasterautokeys and the cuts off the photos were perfect. I programed both new remotes and my old one to the car again so everything locks and unlocks. But of course, unable to program the keys. looks like theres some stupid module you need to set the key on.

The door key trick works if you have two original keys. my car came with one single key

That only solves the problem for one of the two keys. I dont think this version of the key has that glass chip inside it. It looks like its something on the computer board so youd have to swap the whole board. Also this key case design is held together with a pin. it goes together once and basically has to be broken in half to get it apart. ill just keep looking for somebody who can program them

Pretty sure MK6 and beyond have to talk directly to the VW mothership in Germany via a dealer to match keys, but maybe the free market now has some options. Or a delete.

There's a little glass chip inside the fob. Your car is programmed to use the chip in your broken fob. If you remove the chip from your new fob & glue the old chip into the new fob, the car should run. Use acetone to remove the chips, don't force them out.
That was true on the mk4 keys; by Mk6, they'd made some "improvements", as @Vince Waldon stated.
