I've already fixed this, but I'm going to throw it out there for the benefit of google.
My 2015 Golf sportwagen has the keyless ignition. Yesterday I went to go out for lunch and it wouldn't start, displaying "key not in range" when I pressed the starter button. There was never the usual "replace key battery" warning before that and the door locks also still worked. So I was doubting if the problem was just the battery.
I managed to get held the key up against the spot on the steering column with one hand and still press the ignition with the other and it started right up, of course. So instead of my plan to go fill up with cheap Diesel, I went to the store and got a new 2025 battery. Swapped it out and everything worked fine and the car started up as normal.
So just throwing it out there for reference because even though the usual signs weren't there for the key fob battery as the problem, that was still the cause.
