2009 jetta tdi. Last night I shut the car off and went inside to grab food, 5 min later came out and the key would not turn all the way. After 5 minutes of messing with it, I got the key to turn by adjusting the steering wheel. This morning, it’s doing the same thing, but no matter how much I move the wheel around, it will not turn more than a 1/4 turn. Does this sound like an ignition key issue? Can you change them out at home, or will it need taken to a be dealer to be replaced and programmed. Closest one is 2.5 hours away.

I just went through this last week! You will need to follow this video to remove/replace the interlock module.
Don't remove the airbag or steering wheel.

The punch trick was easy. I hit the bolts with a little penetrating oil before attempting to remove them. The part is about 50$ on RockAuto. Honestly, the bolts were a little daunting but came out easily. You can use your finger to spin it once you've gotten it loose. I also replaced those bolts with regular hex-head screws.

The issue is the key cylinder lock mechanism has locked up and failed. its a common issue. 6 months ago I've had the same issue on my 2008 mkv 2.5.

if you're comfortable with removing the steering wheel and airbag its a job that can be done in less then a day. Otherwise its a pain in the "rear end"
