Key fobs stopped working?

Hey guys, looking for some help here. My key fob stopped working a couple days ago. No remote use at all, the red LED still flashes, and I've tried using my second fob as well with no luck.Checked all related fuses, I went through the standard re-coding with the key in the door and ignition. Also tried coding using vag-com, no luck. Any help or troubleshooting advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

you could have a dead battery. The battery designation is 2032. I have seen then at Canadian Tire and Home Depot. Don't buy it from yhe dealer, they want five time as much for the battery.

Have you tried it from further away? Mine can be a bit strange and work great from 50ft away but rubbish if I'm standing near the car

Battery is still good, I have a scangauge and on ignition power it shows 13. Something volts. As for distance that's a no go, for the amount of times I've walked away from the car while still trying to lock it in the passed couple days! Would it be possible for the control module to fail? Where's the harness? Could it get accidentally moved?

it is not the car battery but the coin sized CR2032 battery within the remote itself which may be faulty.Try changing this first see link -www.riskin.org/vwkey -these are available on line and i would not not pay dealer prices for these.

How would both batteries go at the same time? Also the LED's still flash bright as they did the day I bought it.

I have the same problem with a 2000 Jetta. I tried my remote at Advance Auto(they have a receiver, tells you if the remote is transmitting) it works also tested batteries bothe good. Where is receiver in the car?

Here's a strange on e for you but it works on our seats,

Turn the ignition on for 3 seconds, off again and take out the key, hold down the lock button and press the unlock one 3 times, I just tried it on mine and if you do it right the car locks and unlocks and the little red light on the remote flashes 5 times

Give it a go, nothing to lose anyway.

Ok tried that too, no luck, bought a battery for the remote today, also no luck. I took the kick panel out to find the antenna wire and it's ok, is the box it plugs into the CCM? If so maybe I'll try one from a donor car and see if I cam resync them to it? I can't think of anything else and I really, really don't want to take it to the dealer.

Yeh that should be the box, if can borrow one to try that would be good, the only other thing I can think of would be the fobs but that doesn't make sense as it's two of them at the same time.

Ok thanks for the help guys, if anyone else has some suggestions feel free to post. I'm going to see if I can find a usable box to test with.

Similar problem to mine. Both remotes just quit. However, if i stand really close to the car it works. >5' away and no remote function. As stated before, red light still blinks.

I had a simular issue 5-6 years ago. I had to replace the Convience Controller Module (CCM). All is good now.

^^ thank you for your input. Upon searching for threads no body suggests a new CCM. Hopefully this thread will be someone else's answer. I've found one to try, just need to go get it, maybe tomorrow.

Upon further searching for how to adapt a different CCM to my fobs I stumbled across this thread. Different issue but possible connection if there's another relay or bad contact.

The CR2032 is a standard battery available at just about anywhere: your local supermarkets, drug stores, hardware stores, computer stores, etc. I usually just get mine at Wal-Mart or Radio Shack.

do try the "touching battery cables together" trick, supposedly it discharges some capacitors or something

lol thats what I was pointing out. I'm glad someone finally mentioned it. Stupid internet with no emotion writing. There seems to be no threads that make mention of the CCM at all, until you posted that.

I have 1 remote that works and 1 (used the most) that quit. I have replaced the battery and the led flashes on the remote before and after battery change. Pretty strange, I know. Any Help will be appreciated.

I had to reprogram the key today using the owners manual and that seemed to work. This is the first car that I have ever owned that I actually used the owners manual!

Just wondering if you found a solution. Both my 2000 Golf TDI's key fobs stopped working one cold day. I used the car until it warmed up quite a bit and the fobs worked again. Now it's cold again and they're not working. Seems like more than just a coincidence. Should I bother finding a replacement battery or would you say it's the ccm?

I'm pretty sure my problem has something to do with fuse 14. I took out/put back in fuse 14 and now I can at least turn the car on without the alarm going off.

Clean the ground connections

I was experiencing this problem with the remote as well. It would sometimes work when I was standing away from the car. Rarely would it unlock. So I could never open the door for my date--one of them let me know about it...

Anyway, my car battery finally died and I replaced it. The new battery died within 24 hours, so I suspected the alternator. Instead of mucking with the alternator, I tried removing the battery box and disconnecting the ground wires connected to three ground lugs beneath the box.

I cleaned all the ring connectors, sanding down to bare metals. I brushed the lugs with a copper wire brush and treated them with a electrical conducting gel (Dow Corning #4 Electrical Insulating Compound).

I cleaned up the black wire coming from the alternator to the fuse box on top of the battery with vinegar and the copper wire brush. The copper wire was shiny again.

After all this, the alternator was able to charge the battery properly again. And the remote key fob now consistently locks and unlocks the doors from any distance!

Yeah both my fobs just did the same thing. Died at the same time, same day.

It doesn't make any sense it would be the batteries in the fobs but it does make sense that its the receiving unit.

Both still unlock the car but neither lock it.

So where is the receiving unit again ? and yeah. I'll check the fuses and the batteries anyway just cause its easy. But both at the same time, unlikely ;-)

I agree that it is unlikely to be fuses or keyfob batteries
it could be that you need to reboot the system.
it worked on a mark 4 golf 2002 model. I disconnected the battery negative terminal for a few minutes then reconnected it.
it worked on that car and may work on yours.
otherwise the owner's manual also has a write up on rebooting which may help.
finally vag.com ,may help diagnose under central conveniences.

Boston, sounds like the drivers door switch not seeing the door as closed? Theres a couple ccm fuses tucked away above the relay panel under the dash as well.

I'm corn fuzed.

Thanks Steve. I'll take a look for those fuses. The mechanism started working today for a while but sets off the alarm just as often as not. Right now its unlocked because no matter what it went off when I tried to lock it.

Thing has a mind of its own. I'm going to check fuses in the morning and then try disconnecting the bat.

Thanks for the suggestions.

+ down

When the problem is:
keyfob stopped working after changing battery
re-check new battery polarity.

It may be +down in the holder, which is counter-intuitive with most similar holders.
