Wouldn't know, my dealer told me they don't have batteries (if they had batteries the security function wouldn't work). Another dealer told me to go to radio shack and have them do it, hen if they screw up it's their fault. Funny how stupid I must be for not knowing that a portable electronic devise doesn't have batteries. Another way for the "stealer" to make another $100 bucks?

That is an excellent thread for opening up the 'older' remotes. It should be noted, however, that the 2001 remotes do not have the screwdriver 'notch' on the side. There is no visible way to release the two halves. Hopefully we have a couple of years or more battery life to find the secret.

My key doesn't have the notch on the outside either, but when I flip open the key and look inside the "cavity" there is a notch right in the middle where the halves of the key come together. It looks like it would accomodate a small screwdriver. I'm too chicken to try it though until the batteries go dead!

Unfortunately, the side ‘cavity’ doesn’t work. It will let you open up the key slightly, but it closes back as soon as you let go.

I don’t have digital cam, so I have to rely on the DZLKopf’s picture.

My 2001 doesn’t have the notch the lower green arrow is pointing, but has the lip the upper one is pointing. As DZLKopf’s, the lip is the only thing holding the two halves together. I used the smallest screwdriver to pry up the lip while pulling. - Jin

My 2001 Jetta key does not have the notch, either. Funny, I asked my dealer about battery replacement, and was told that they last 18 months to 2 years of daily use, and that they (dealer) charge about $5 for battery replacement.
