Are they any use these days or will they still perform well
I'm planning on using one in a 1Z as it seems to be the easiest and cheapest option for upgrade

Assuming it's in great shape, in my mind a K14 is a great turbo for a 1.9l engine... very quick to spool and good for 18-ish psi before they become more of a heat pump than anything else.

Ran one on an AAZ back in the day... very drivable in the city but good for passing on the highway.

I had K14 in my car as OEm turbo, did perform very good.
I found it to be indestructible... after very hard abuse (>2bar spikes and 1.8bar of boost for over a year of driving) when I took it out it had no shaft play at all.
Bear in mind it was a turbo with over 150.000 miles on it.

I totaly agree...
I had arround 180 on my 5 cyl, so I would say 200 hp is the upper max limit (air flow limit) if I am optimistic.

I've been running the K14 at 25psi for over a year with race520 injectors and its rock solid. It blows hot but 9Gallon/hour of water meth cools it down very quick.

I take it this is a waste gate turbo? Is it a bigger bugger than the standard or just better for boosting?

K24 is just as old and used on 16TD also.... The old school turbo are easy to install since they share the same manifold as 1.6/1.9 TD's and will bolt any 8 valves VW. and the feed line and drain line from mk3 1.9TD will also bolt a AHU /1Z TDI with the modification of the engine harness bracket.

if you want cheap and easy upgrade the old school are nice. if you want more you can go with garrett GT2056 which will flow more and be efficient up to 30psi.

K14 flows more air than any vnt17. every tdi with vnt 17 chiped by kerma, rocket or mrtunning got smoked away by my evry mod and a k14.
Let's compare power to weight ratios. What type of TDI has the above mods?

Where can the k14 be found? I have some variation of garret turbo as standard on my car and it's a wastegate too, bit like an ALH with a wastegate tubro.

I run a K14 on my AAZ. It s a turbo that turns into a big heat pump after 15psi.
I ve just bought a GTB1722V and am switching to the AHU.
This should fix the heat pump problem.
My K14 came on a 93 jetta I bought. rebuid kit was $35. It s better then the K03, but its got such a short power range.
