Thanks to this forum I was able to do the full 40k service in about three hours and it was my first time so naturally it will probably take less time next time. I was amazed at the 850 dollar quote I got for 200 dollars in parts and most likely 2 hours of work at a dealership.

Everything went smoothly. Next time I will be investing in some ramps though. Just wanted to post and let people know how easy it is instead of getting scammed by the dealership.

Congratulations. You saved yourself a lot of money, and offered encouragement to those that are on the fence about doing their own service.

I will quibble with your use of the term "scammed", though. Dealerships have to charge whatever is necessary for their employees, insurance, inventory, overhead, etc. etc. It's not a scam, it's the cost of doing business.:)

I will be doing mine Saturday, while I don't have the time to do a full DIY video I may upload some of the process. How long did it take to fill the DSG via the filter hole?

I just had my 30k done at the dealership under the assumption that is was covered by warranty like the 10k & 20k were. $225 out the door. While I was there the service rep told me that the 40K would be upwards of $1k (USD in South Florida). He then proceeded to tell me that VW offers a "Volkswagen Care Plus" package that will cover both the 40k & 50k services for $719. I can purchase anytime up to the 40k mark. Is this a worth while deal? I never change my own oil and always bring it to the dealer. I can handle electronics but when it comes to changing the oil, I'll let the dealer do it. Any thoughts?

You need to ask what all is included in that package.

If it is just the engine 40k and 50k, then I would say the difference is negligible.

If it includes the required DSG service, the. I would say yes since you were already quoted upwards ok $1K (which is horrendously ridiculous).

Remember, dealerships and insurance companies aren't in the business of losing money...

DSG. If you can change the oil the DSG isn't bad at all
Did my NMS today, was the same as other DSG's like the JSW my friend owns (maybe even same trans?) I would say that the DSG service is even easier than a oil change, at least the filter is easier to get to ;)
Its honestly way way easier than a "normal" automatic because most American auto's don't even have a drain plug

"Covers the 40k and 50k manufacture recommended scheduled maintenance for MY14 models and newer.
Can be purchased for qualified vehicles at or before your 40k scheduled maintenance service is due."

This is from a post card the the service rep gave me as I was paying for the 30k service. I didn't think it sounded too bad.

This doesn't surprise me. S. FL is the home of large dealer doc fees and service/repair bills.

When I had my 2012 40k service, I was out of state, in Louisiana. Fee was $650. Not nearly as cheap as DIY but cheaper than FL.

Finished my 40k + DSG yesterday. Not to bad if you have all the tools and supplies all set out before hand. Getting that battery pan out the first time took some time for me because I did not want to break anything, and that hose that comes off the bottom of the pan kept coming off and going down behind the front bumper:D.

Did you replace the filter? An independent repair guy said many people forget about replacing the filter because it is tricky to reach.

The entire airbox needs to be removed as it sits on top of the front edge of the battery pan, the intake was the worst of the entire 40K service IMHO.
One question for you all, My replacement DSG filter given to me by the dealer was just a foamy style element while the one I removed (pict) was more of a paper and had a plastic cage around it.
Part number given to me by dealer:
02E 305 051 C
One removed:
02E 305 051 D

Having disconnected the battery to move it and the tray out of the way, one needs to recalibrate the steering. The efforts involved were such that I spread it out over a 3-day weekend: did the fluid twice one day (for the same basic hassle, why not spend $100 more and get 93% instead of 74% new fluid), wrestled the battery and air filter housing the next, and, after the few minutes the fairly well automated DSG calibration takes, hoped that my holding the steering, and the road surface, were straight enough to properly calibrate the steering again. Why that info cannot be saved in a $0.25 EEPROM I cannot fathom.
You can really tell how the steering computer has lost the plot after no-power by how hard it hits the steering stops when you turn lock-to-lock to calibrate.

(There's also DSG calibration itself, but's that's due to the new fluid and as well as DSG wear in general.)

I'll be connecting a charger (or more likely: an adjustable power supply, so I can (dis)connect without votlage surges) next time, and make sure I replace the battery before it wears out all the way.

Yes I replaced the filter as well. One thing I did notice was how black the oil was. I have heard of people changing the oil every 20 or 30k on diesels, but I wouldn't want to go much over 10k since it was so black.

That and the fact that it only holds 4.5 quarts

Motor oil in a diesel turns black within days (if not hours) of the change. The color is no indication of its condition. It's simply colored by the combustion blow-by that invariably gets past the rings and into the sump. Diesel engine oil is designed to hold it in suspension, and the oil change intervals take it into account. Nothing to worry about. :D

Plan on doing this tomorrow on my 2012. The only thing that I am unsure of is getting the airbox out of the way. After watching this video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMbchti7Qjo I have a better idea on how to get it out of the way. I know its a Jetta but looks identical to my Passat. Hope this helps others.
