When doing a search for avalibility there seems to be three times as many black passat tdi cars to be had. Just wonder why? Personally I like the black but as usual hate it when it is dirty.

Pretty much every dealer got one or two of these back in late summer as demo cars. Now they are for sale.

Haven't you heard; "Black is Beautiful."

Mine sure is. I wouldn't have any other color. Black on Black. Very MI-5, MI-6, CIA, Secret Service, looking.

These were the first production demos for the dealers. They were supposed to have been DESTROYED since they were not the final production materials.

Check the build date before buying one. I would NOT buy one of them.

My dealer was required to sign contracts that they could NOT sell the demos. In the process they were told that they would "probably" be destroyed after being returned. VW may have changed that policy at some point.

These were first run vehicles so VW was preparing for the WORST case that they had major flaws and that is why I believe they set the expectation to never get these vehicles out to consumers.

It is one thing for dealers doing demo rides having these vehicles versus a customer having these vehicles.

Again, IMHO, I would not buy these vehicles, but some might be willing to for a HUGE discount, most definitely NOT at full cost, especially if they have miles on them.

Check the manufacturer date. If before say 8/30, they were early production line runs, possibly demos.

I'm wondering why they haven't all been destroyed!!! If TomB's correct, they're already worn out/obsolete!

I asked VW about this, because of the horrid texture of the paint on the black demo at the local dealer. I did nto get a clear answer ("talk to the dealer", who couldn't tell anything in the first place, "talk to 800-VW-GIVES-A-"). The quoted part above makes more sense of this.

The black SE manual on my dealers lot had a Jan 2012 build date, and absolutely the most horrid orange peel finish I've ever seen on a black car. It flat out looked chunky. I don't think the new primer / finish paint in one shot works well in the darker colors, based on what I've seen. The lighter colors hide it better, the textured orange peel finish.

Very curious, Niner. Our black (early production) is perfectly smooth, and I've spent hours staring at it, trying to find imperfections.
I'm still baffled by the painting process, even after seeing video. I understand though that painting process for ALL makes is always a closely guarded secret.

Either they made a lot of them in black, or they sell a lot of black ones in the cooler months, or they just don't sell as well as the other colors in this model. To each his own.

black TDI

My wife wanted black. We test drove at least 6 passats over the last 4 weeks. white, brown, red and some other blue color. She only wanted black. She has in the past broke both feet and even though I wanted a manual she said it did not matter. The DSG was the first black one that came avaliable. I believe though the manual cars are getting harder to find to find because car companies dont want to make manual cars anymore. Most people the buy cars dont want manuals anymore either. CVT's are the normal now and fit most people. You really have to be a driving nut to wait it out to get a manual car anymore. Looking for the last car we bought a lot of manufacturers dont make manual anymore. The only way to get one is buy a sports car as most sport car buyers still want to drive the car not just stomp the petals.

Black is as fussy as a Home Coming Queen is about the boy she dates for the Prom. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too high maintenance for me.

That's what I saw on the demo car last fall. I figured it was only on early cars...but I guess that's what they got when they shopped for a paint process by going for the maximum green PR potential, instead of performance. I wonder how long the paint lasts? I hear MB had a 'green' paint process some years ago, and learned the hard way.

I wanted black on black, couldn't find one. Plenty of black TDI's, all of them had the tan interior which is a no no with two kids! I was going to trade in my black on black W8 wagon, but icouldn't part with it. Yeah, it's high maintenance like that prom queen, but dang can she rock your world when you treat her right :)
