Both the new Ford Mustang and the new VW Jetta are facing possible recalls as a result of ongoing investigations by safety officials.
The Mustangs in question are those from the 2011 and 2012 model year equipped with a manual transmission, with reports from owners stating an inability to shift into gears while merging into high speed traffic or while turning left across oncoming traffic. A total of 32 complaints have gone through NHTSA on the Mustang.
On the Volkswagen Jettas equipped with TDI, seven complaints have been filed alleging a leak from the fuel line to the fuel injector. NHTSA has also received one complaint from a VW Golf equipped with the 2.0L TDI. Incidents are being reported between 2,470 to 7,764 miles and could impact 40,000 Jetta TDI vehicles.
Both of these cases may or may not result in recalls.

Another NHTSA investigation!

http://www.greencarreports.com/news...n-diesel-woes-feds-investigate-2011-jetta-tdi
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration last week launched an investigation into leaks between the fuel line and the engine fuel injectors on all-new 2011 Volkswagen Jetta TDI sedan, as well as the carryover 2011 Jetta TDI SportWagen model...

The latest investigation comes on the heels of an NHTSA inquiry into fuel pump failures on 2009 and 2001 Jetta, Golf, and A3 TDI models.
The cause of those failures, which have affected some owners even in replacement pumps, may be dirty or contaminated diesel fuel. Volkswagen is now apparently requiring its service technicians to take a small sample of fuel from every new TDI car that comes in for service.
This is a 2nd investigation into a new TDI problem in the CR engine. Not only are we at risk for HPFP failure, but now our fuel lines may leak as well!

Mk6 Jetta Fuel line leak - possible recall

http://www.egmcartech.com/2011/08/0...-volkswagen-jetta-being-investigated-by-nhtsa

Possible recall (lol) involving 2011 Jetta TDI's -- fuel line leak near "injector number 2"

" leaking from the fuel line ... the #2 fuel injector in 2011 Volkswagen Jetta vehicles equipped with 2.0-liter TDI common-rail "

Some have reported a valve cover (?) leak, could this be the culprit?
Discuss.

Ive had one at work. No idea what caused it, loosened and re-tightened the line and it kept leaking. No visible damage to the sealing surface on the flare or the injector. Put a new line on it and all was well.

When the '09 CR first came out, there were members that had to have the #2 line replaced for leaking, so this isn't new.

I've had fuel lines on other diesels do this also. Has to be a hair line crack that either vibrates to get worse or warms up and opens the crack.

The CR Cummins engines in Ram trucks are notorious for the #4 HP fuel line springing leaks. This happened to my truck.

Stop-sale issued for Volkswagen Jetta and Golf TDI diesel models, recall imminent?"

http://www.autoblog.com/2011/10/05/stop-sale-issued-for-volkswagen-jetta-and-golf-tdi-diesel-models/

According to a post by TDI Club, Volkswagen has issued a stop-sale on all 2009-2012 Jetta, Jetta Sportwagen and Golf TDI vehicles equipped with the company's 2.0-liter TDI turbo-diesel engine pending a voluntary safety recall. It's unclear whether or not the 2012 Passat will also be impacted. In a written communication attributed to Volkswagen, the problem stems from the fact that the fuel injector pulse rate happens to occur at the same natural frequency as injector line number two. Over time, the line could fail. That's especially true on certain lines manufactured with tube material that contains scratch marks from a grinding process. Volkswagen says that the inferior piece can't stand up to the stress of the injector pulse rate.

Vehicles manufactured in December 2008, January through February 2009, April 2010 and October through December 2010 all contain the faulty part. The document states that the automaker is currently working with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to establish a recall.

Autoblog spoke with a Volkswagen representative who said that in order for any recall to be official, it will have to go through NHTSA (though we're thinking the same can't be said of a stop-sale).
Felt that this should be posted in the news section too.

Report Date : October 6, 2011 at 07:48 AM NHTSA Campaign ID number : 11V490000

Vehicle Make / Model: Model Year(s): AUDI / A3 2010-2012
VOLKSWAGEN / GOLF 2010-2012
VOLKSWAGEN / JETTA 2009-2012
VOLKSWAGEN / JETTA SPORTWAGEN 2009-2012
Manufacturer: VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA, INC Mfr's Report Date: SEP 30, 2011 NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 11V490000 NHTSA Action Number: N/A Component: FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL Potential Number of Units Affected: 168,275 Summary:
VOLKSWAGEN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL 2009-2012 JETTA AND JETTA SPORTWAGEN VEHICLES, MANUFACTURED FROM MAY 2008 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 2011, MODEL YEAR 2010-2012 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF VEHICLES, MANUFACTURED FROM MAY 2009 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 2011, AND MODEL YEAR 2010-2012 AUDI A3 VEHICLES, MANUFACTURED FROM SEPTEMBER 2009 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 2011, THAT ARE EQUIPPED WITH A 2.0L TDI COMMON RAIL DIESEL ENGINE/CLEAN DIESEL ENGINE. THE FUEL INJECTION PULSES COULD COINCIDE WITH THE NATURAL FREQUENCY OF THE INJECTOR LINE #2, IN SPECIFIC LOAD AND RPM CONDITIONS. THIS RESONANCE CREATES ADDITIONAL STRESS IN THE FUEL LINE. Consequence:
DUE TO THE RESONANCE CONDITION, INJECTOR LINE NUMBER 2 COULD DEVELOP SMALL CRACKS WHICH COULD LEAD TO FUEL LEAKAGE. LEAKING FUEL IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, MAY LEAD TO A FIRE. Remedy:
VOLKSWAGEN WILL INSTALL AN IMPROVED FUEL INJECTOR LINE FOR THE NUMBER 2 CYLINDER AND WILL INSTALL VIBRATION DAMPERS ON ALL OF THE INJECTOR LINES. VOLKSWAGEN AND AUDI WILL NOTIFY OWNERS TO HAVE THE VEHICLES REPAIRED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING NOVEMBER 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT VOLKSWAGEN AT 1-800-822-8987. This Issue Earns an Embargo and a Recall

LLN: VW issues Jetta, Golf TDI stop-sale

Volkswagen has temporarily told its dealers to stop selling several of its diesel-powered compact cars built for the 2009 through 2012 model years ahead of what it calls an "upcoming voluntary safety recall." The diesel-fueled VWs in question include 2009-2012 Jetta and Jetta SportWagen models as well as 2010-2012 Golfs equipped with the company's 2.0-liter TDI four-cylinder engine.

At fault is a fuel injection system that VW says could send pulses that interfere with the "natural frequency of the injector line #2 in specific load and RPM conditions." As a result, VW says that fuel lines could be placed under undue stress that could sever them. VW blames the issue in part on fuel tubes delivered by a certain supplier between 2008 and 2010 that had scratch marks on them caused by a production process.

Sounds like the real problem is the harmonics. The scratch is just the weak point that fails first.

I just got an email from my dealer telling me there is a recall on my 2011 TDI (just bought it last week). She said it's VW to be over cautious. It's for recall (23J9) for Diesel Fuel Lines

Certainly sounds like harmonics is the main issue, otherwise I can't imagine why only line 2 and why they would need dampers on the rest of the lines. Each line has a different series of bends.

All models and years 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012, are under recall. It only took 4 years for VW to do something about it.

I recall seeing a burned up white TDI wagon for sale at auction in the Seattle area 3 months back, fire under the hood.

Huh, I wish VW would get overly cautious about their HPFP supplier... it's long overdue.

They issued a recall expected to start in November-

Wow 170,000 Tdi's affected. Pretty insane. There's gotta be a connection to the HPFP failures. Even if it's not from the fuel line, maybe the harmonics are causing the pump to come apart just like the line.

I was wondering what the RPM/load range was?
I am going to place my bet on 1800 RPMs at light to medium load (or 30 mph in 3rd gear at steady speed)
Where mine would stumble and misfire. (did not do it at no load, coasting, or full load WOT, just stumbling along on city streets.)

BREAKING*** VW recalls 170k CR TDIs for injector issues -

I got super duper excited for about .3 of a second, till it said ...injectors. Not hpfp, or intercooler... Interesting nonetheless. Could this be the culprit behind the leaks some see around the base of the injectors? Perhaps these vibrations could cause microscopic cracks in the injector lines? Any metallurgists here that can weigh in on the properties of whatever metal is used?

This same problem happens on the CR Cummins engines in Ram trucks. The number 4 HP fuel line splits. It happened to my '06 and the part was on national back order at the time because so many where popping. They replaced it with an updated P/N and all is well. The Cummins comes with isolation clamps on all the fuel lines except #6. That line never goes though, always #4.
