My Jetta too had the whistle from the mirror. But I heard it only when the window was down and I was driving over 45 mph.

Exactly the same for me!! The dealer said my driver's side door was mis-aligned and corrected it... we shall see if this fixes it.

I like the Golf better than the Jetta; but just make sure that the Golf they're trying to sell you isn't another VW buy-back. If you need the room, I'd suggest a Golf wagon. I think the Golf hatch is more fun to drive and is slightly quieter (it's on a newer platform with better insulation), but the wagon is hard to beat if you need room. I got the hatch because it fits my needs perfectly.

its easy to solve the mirror issue, i'll post some pictures soon.

I put a piece of tape between the gap and mirror and also put a tape on the top of the mirror. It seems to be the top part that is whistling and not the gap. As long as i had the top piece of tape on there was no whistling

I tried pushing on the black frame of the mirror while driving and agree that it's the top frame. I'm going to get some clear silicone caulking and apply a very thin bead near the joint of the plastic frame and the painted housing. That should fix the issue, I hope!

i just received an update from my dealer (canadian side of the story). good news for us is that there is a second confirmation from a dealer advising that the whistle is stemming from the ridge on the mirror housing. VW is in the process of casting a new mirror housing. So everyone can now call their dealers to get in the queue for the fix when the replacement parts arrive.
