I have a '03 jetta TDI that has a fan switch problem. The ac/heater switch only blows air when it is in the highest, #4, speed. The 3 lower speeds don't blow at all.

Thanks in advance.

There is a resistor pack that allows different blower speeds that is probably burned out. It is most likely mounted on the motor.

The less likely posibility is the switch is bad........................

The resistor block is not all that expensive and not Too hard to get to on most cars. It is also possible that the fan motor is not running well and drawing more current and the new resistors may burn out in a short time.

I would replace the resister pack and see what happens. If it goes out again soon, then do the motor as well.

Good Luck

__. Yeah, resistor pack. I had to replace the heater/air con blower motor and fan unit because it kept burning the resistor packs out.

You might be able to find one at a autoparts store, but I think I would just stop by the dealer.

Where can I purchase this resistor pack?

Thanks

__. The resistor pack is a plastic plate about 2" by 9" long. It has the electrical parts installed on it. WorldImpex has the electronic module in stock for about $22; it appears pretty easy to replace it on the plastic plate and you're back in business.

__. Also, it's easy to get the plate off -- fold down the insulator on the "bottom of the glove box", pull the two screws (I think 10mm), and the plate comes off. Disconnect the wiring connector and it's in your hand.

06' with no fan

Hello, I have a 06' Jetta TDI that has a bad fan. It just stoped working one cool winter day last week. This is my first VW and I was looking for a fuse for the fan and couldn't find it  Would my 06' Jetta have the same type of resistor, be in the same location and be the same part number ? Any help would be much appreciated , I would like to fix this myself if it is as easy as you say it is for a 03' Jetta because at $95 or more an hr shop rate I don't want to take it to the VW dealer.
Thanks VWGord

__. The resister controls speeds 1-3; usually, if it's the resister pack, the fan will run OK on speed 4 (the A/C won't come on but that's not much of an issue in the GWN in January ;)).

__. "No fan at all" is usually a fuse (which is rare because they usually blow the resister pack before they blow a fuse - but it happens), the contacts in the 1-2-3-4 switch, or the fan itself.

I have no fan at all, 2 days after it stoped working the 1st time it worked was going into work , it worked all the waay about half an hr ,and for 5 minutes on way home from work till I made a stop at a store. When I got back in the car to go home it was not working again.
In the manual it does not have a listing for fuse for the heater fan. But I don't have the origional manual the one that came with it was french and the dealer got me another from a different car.Is it posible that there is no fuse for the heater fan ? Just the resistor on the moter it self ?

I have a 98' TDI Jetta. Similar problem except heater worked, turned to off, then no work. In the past I had to replace the 1-4 heater switch, (it melted). I got one off ebay used. Shall I suspect it is the same item now?, and if I wanted new where do I find?

__. Two good sources are idparts.com and worldimpex.com but location is important. I've had really good results with impex but I can often drive up there and pick things up. idparts (formerly called TDIParts) has been good but since shipping is involved, things take longer unless you shell out the big-buck expedited shipping. Maybe some "upper-MidWest" people can give you more local suggestions.

Fan update. Since post fan came back on (all speeds functional). I just removed trim piece looked for melting/burning, nothing, put together and it worked. Fast forward to present day. Fan stopped working removed trim piece again and it worked. Turned car off, restarted, no fan. Removed trim piece again still doesn't work. Is there a way to test the "resistor" on the fan motor? A way to test switch? A way to test wiring to switch? I would prefer not to buy a new switch and resistor when only 1 may be malfunctioning. Thanks for the help so far...
BTW Its kinda chilly in WI area so looking for fast accurate solutions... :)

February 26, 2010 - I read this thread and this repair still works fine (on 2003 jetta wagon 207000 odo). Went in from under the glove box. pulled down the foam. Replaced the blower resistor (purchased on EBAY from EuroAsiana Auto Parts LLC $45 w/ shipping). The old one was rusty and looked like it should have failed long ago. back to having 4 speeds of blower and ice cold factory air. Thanks forum.

tseed, I would take the fan motor out and look at the brushes. I would also take the switch out and make sure it is ok. Does your car have a fan control module? Hope this helps. Thanks Steve
