Re: It\'s here: Gasoline overtakes Diesel in price!

It's 90p a litre here in the UK! $1.70 US or $2.14 Canadian. In gallons...$6.50 US or $8.11 Canadian. My heart bleeds for you! At one time diesel was cheaper than gasoline. Unfortunately as diesel cars became more common the government realised it was losing revenue (higher diesel mileage) so they upped the tax on diesel. Just as well I get 47mpg (Imperial of course!)

Re: It\'s here: Gasoline overtakes Diesel in price!

If Diesel needs less refining than gas, how come diesel costs more than regular and midgrade gasoline andhow the heck are our truckers staying in business? We need the gov't to investigate this BS. And BUSH, he gave a tax credit to suv buyers a few years ago, probably to keep GM and FORD in business.

I'm no Bushie, but I do want to assign blame where blame is due. The law giving a tax break for vehicles weighing over 6,000 lbs and used 50% for work purposes dates back to 1997 -- during the Clinton administration. (I didn't vote for either bozo, so there.) GM & co. started marketing their ridiculous monstrosities at this market, but Congress has consistently failed to close the loophole. Mucho mas info here: Origin of the SUV Tax Deduction: "A Hummer of a Loophole"

I can't place the blame for this stupidity at Bush's feet, though if he had a mind to use his bully pulpit to lambaste Congress for their inactivity, something might get done. It would be a heck of a lot more of a concrete action than drilling in the ANWR, regardless of your feelings on that subject.

Meanwhile, here in D/FW, I'm making a mental list of stations whose diesel has failed to drop to within 5-7c of RUL. I've already noticed that the stations with the oldest price are the ones where I filled up, and then wondered why the Bug didn't run as well.

Tonight I paid $2.39 for Shell Premium diesel and V-Power at the same station was $2.45. ULR was $2.25. That's actually an improvement (lower diesel price) for our area.

Northeast of Indianapolis diesel was $2.28 on Monday and regular unleaded gasoline at $2.49. This is the biggest spread that I have seen favoring diesel in a long time.

however, first time in a while that diesel has been below premium. also, reg unled is closing the gap. it was around $0.20/gallon less.

On the Southern Oregon Coast...
regular: $2.65
Premium: $2.85
Diesel: $2.93
Now this will really encourage people here to buy diesel vehicles won't it...

In southeast Ohio I saw diesel for less than regular the other day. Regular was 2.39, diesel was 2.36. Prolly just forgot to change the signs tho.

gas jumping in $0.05 increments here while diesel appears (hopefully) to have levelled off. maybe soon we'll see diesel dropping (hopefully).

Not really the case here...at some places yes, at some places no. Prices (even diesel
) shot up yesterday $.05/gal.

Well, if people were smart (which they are usually not), they would be able to see that diesel only costs 11% more than regular, using your numbers. Pretty much any case where you have a gas or diesel engine option, the diesel is going to get a lot better than an 11% imnprovement in fuel economy. But, like I said... most people are not smart enough to figure that out. Heck, most people can't even calculate miles per gallon.

Lee_Taylor, you make a good point, but there is a problem with your pricing logic. You are taking the dollar to pound exchange rate into effect. The fact is that a dollar is basically a pound. An American who gets paid $50,000 per year is making the same kind of money as a Britton who makes £50,000. So, your £0.90/L diesel is about £3.42 per US gallon... or the equivalent of $3.42 per US gallon. Still more than diesel costs anywhere in the US, with the exception of Hawaii... but it's getting pretty close!

The exchange rate only applies if I am bringing my $ to the UK to buy diesel, or if you are bringing your £ to the US to buy yours. In that case, you would win hands down... but that's mainly because the exchange rate is heavily in your favor right now.

The exchange rate per Yahoo finance is £1 = $1.7949. So, £0.90/L works out to $1.615 per liter, or $6.115 per gallon. It would be nice to have the dollar and pound at parity, though...

Diesel in Reno was $2.72 at the cheap truck stop yesterday. Many other places are $2.99. Expect to see it all above $3.00 soon. Gas yesterday was $2.61.

Hedre in Carson City, diesel has already hit $3.00. Gas at the same station is only $2.60. I read that a refinary in El Segundo is having trouble making diesel.

This is the best spread I've seen all summer.

Re: It\'s here: Gasoline overtakes Diesel in price!

Wow. I filled up yesterday near my house at the Kroger station that has diesel. Prices were spectacular (for me)

Reg: 2.39
Plus: 2.49
Prem: 2.59
Diesel: 2.29

Then, if you've spent more than $100 in groceries during the month, you get another $.10 per gal off. I filled up at $2.19 per gallon. You'd better believe I was venting during that fillup.

Re: It\'s here: Gasoline overtakes Diesel in price!

vikingrob, my point is that the exchange rate doesn't matter in the case of fuel... unless you are taking a trip to the UK and using your dollars converted to pounds to fill a rental car. Then it's going to hurt.

My point is that a dollar is to an American as a pound is to a Britton. We're not talking about exchanging any currency. If their fuel is 90p/L, that's like paying $0.90/L here in the USA. There are about 3.8 liters in a US gallon, so that makes it about $3.42/US gallon. See what I'm saying?

In other words, if you or I go out and buy a new Sony DVD player for $200, that same DVD player would probably cost £200 in the UK. There's no exchange rate to factor in unless you are taking your dollars to the UK and buying the DVD player there. A dollar is basically a pound. The exchange rate is different, but that still holds true.

Re: It\'s here: Gasoline overtakes Diesel in price!

Back to the original topic:

At my local Sunoco:
Regular gas: $2.44
Diesel: $2.49
Diesel at XtraFuels: $2.35 (didn't catch the gas prices)

Recently, whenever there's a jump in the price of gas, diesel will go up within a day or two. Gass jumped today... let's see if diesel follows.

Re: It\'s here: Gasoline overtakes Diesel in price!

From the Commodoties Exchange for today:

Heating Oil (NYM) September 05 ($US per gal.) $1.84

Unleaded Gas (NYM) September 05 ($US per gal.) $1.91

This is the narrowest spread all week. Unleaded was 10 cents above diesel on the Market three days ago. It was higher than diesel for the entire month. Now, why the heck is diesel still priced higher than gasoline at the pump?
