The large chrome looking opening... seeking to find out what it does. Visually, it wraps around the exhaust manifold... but I'm trying to figure out what purpose it serves.

that used to be for the factory air filter housing. A tube went there to the bottom of the original housing. For warm air to the engine. It doesn't work now with the new set-up you have

In very cold temps it helps with the running of the engine along with the glow plugs.

Uh, diesel fuel ignites due to the heat of compressed air in cylinder, i.e. no spark plug.

That's why you have glow plugs to get started, but they don't stay actuated.

The hose that was there has a purpose and creates no problem.
