Is there a way to install a fuel consumption monitor device in my B4?

You know, I've looked into it but came up empty. I did many searches on the web. There are gauges that use two flowmeters, one each for supply and return to the tank (it recirculates), but I believe they're for expensive yachts. I guess with yachts, as they say, if you have to ask the price....they were expensive. I think the best would be to retrofit a unit that has MFA. My Beetle doesn't come with MFA (anywhere in the world!), so that's why I was looking.

A B4 TDI instrument cluster w/ an MFA should be available new or used in Europe. This is a much better solution than a consumption meter which won't measure consumpution over distance (only time) or average (cumulative) consumption. MFA also includes readings of oil temp, outside air temp, average speed, etc. Installation would be relatively painless. I have added them to my Passats.

As Chris said, in Europe this should be especially easy if they were available for 94 TDI's. Problems with odometer reading, though.

Chris,
I remember that you said you wanted to revise the conversion writeup a little. The only reason why I'm asking is that I was thinking of adding the MFA to my Passat and wanted to see if the updates are very different that the older version. I have a used GLX cluster already and I just have to find the rest of the pieces/parts.
Thanks
Dan

Dan, the rewrite involves an alternate conversion method which is more costly (by $80), but doesn't require the tach face overlay. Its maybe slightly less work, (a bit more wiring, a bit less work on the cluster itself). It isn't necessarily a better method, it just avoids the tach face overlay and recalibrating the tach and is maybe slightly better looking aesthetically (the tach is easier to read at a glance).

I will write it up one of these days.

Just so you know, Chris, there're at least a few of us waitin' to learn the secret. i'd rather spend the bucks and avoid the tach overlay.

Whenever you get to it, it'll be appreciated.

Thanks for the excellent writeup you did to begin with, by the way.

Thanks Chris for the info. I'll look forward to the updated write up. I'm with gavio with not having to deal with the tach overlay if I don't have to.
