There must be some trick, because for a long time I just can't seem to get good searches on the forum.

For example, today I search "591 seat belt switch airbag vag-com", and I get a list of 1,300 threads! That can't be right.

Dorado: In the Web Page News section, there's a thread titled "Answers to using the TDIClub Search" or something like that. It shows all the tricks. :)

Really, the problem is that the search default is not set the way it should be - it should default to searching thread titles, rather than posts. If this is modified, I'm sure many of the search "issues" would disappear.

I guess you're supposed to click the boolean thingy.. I get just about the same results either way...
Sometimes I find what I want, most of the time it's useless..

Well, when you use the Boolean mode, you're supposed to put AND or OR between each search term. ;)

There's a better way. Don't use the tdiclub search function at all.
Go to www.google.com and in the search box type:

site:forums.tdiclub.com search_term

where "search_term" is any word, or phrase, along with whatever
modifiers you like.

Using google to search tdiclub comes up with much more accurate
results.

I know when I do a google search on a specific automotive subject some TDI Club post will appear.
Sometimes that does seem easier than using the TDI Club Search. I find I start reading all kinds of
off topic data, although some of it is still interesting.

I agree that the search is difficult. I seem to remember that the previous forum incarnations had better search functionality.

Thanks, but judging from your join date of 05, you really dont know how well the search functioned in the old days. It really was better. I know about the thread describing the proper usage of the search function. I'm really quite adept, but still, it cant compare to the old days.

GREAT idea, but how about one more streamlined:

http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/archive/index.php/t-91438.html

The Admin of tdiclub.com would need to implement this feature. I'm not sure it's to replace the standard search feature or to add a secondary search command using the Google engine.

Another idea - I just installed the Greasemonkey scripting tool for Firefox. Way cool thing except I don't know how to write scripts and my search so far has not come up with one I can mod for tdiclub.com. With a scripting tool, you can mod/streamline most websites for your own needs, such as having a Froogle search bar on every Amazon.com product page.

I was just providing the link...

My real join date was Aug 02 when I purchased the car...join date got screwed up when Fred did an upgrade.

I've never been impressed with the search but everything else, format, layout etc is excellent...and of course the content is fantastic.
