The only trouble, is that Miata's are sports cars and hold the same stigma as big trucks. ;)
...Zing!

If the original red paint on my beetle keeps fading, it should look like that any day now!

hmmmm That probably would not be a very aerodynamic design beetler... but it would certainly have a visual impact unmatched by any other car on the road. ;)

I like the cheerful looks of my Beetle (it has a friendly "face"). The ergonomics are great. I am 1,94m/6 ft 3 in tall and love the head- and legroom the car provides. Sure, the hatch cross-section is inferior to a Golf, but I am still amazed at what I can pack into the trunk with the rear bench folded forward.

The other guys at the fire station all drive "manly" pickup trucks, preferably 3/4/ ton 4x4's. I have flowers in the vase on the dash. My self-esteem is such that I do not have to prove anything to anybody (in my opinion a big factor in the choice of vehicle...). The guys got used to it and I rarely hear comments about "watering them flowers" anymore. :)

Also, I relish the thought that, whichever Beetle-hater follows me, will eventually drift out of sight, as his fuel runs out.

Off topic a bit here: Northern NJ diesel price on average close to $4 per gallon. I put $10 today for emergency and it cost me $4.10 per gallon. But even with that, I can make two trips to work which kind of cost me $5 per day to commute from Bergen County NJ to Greenwich CT. I love the little beater. I'll probably have a bigger credit card debt if it was not for my "Love Bug"

If any car is pretty girly...I'd say it's the new mustang. I see more women in those cars than any other....but then again....I live in California.

I got a question: what is the weight difference between the full size spare and a donut? What kind of MPG would I see? How about taking the spare out completely? Not that I am going to do this but what do you think in terms of mileage?

You won't get any miles without the spare. You'll have to walk.

NB Herbie, definitely masculine!

My Y2K TDI NB averages around 45mpg (best ever was 55), and has at one time or another pulled a 'fully-loaded' (arr, arr) hay rack, manure spreader, utility trailer and flarebox wagon full of trash to the dump (the scale operator did a spit-take when I pulled through).

I bought a TDI badge for Herb while in Munich, Germany a couple years ago (chrome/red/red letters). Makes him go faster...

Let's just say, this is one of the finest examples of retro-nu I've seen in the MKIV platform on a Beetle.

Dude, that beetle was painted and detailed correct. Look at those rims? Great piece of work and a great looking car.

Thanks for the kind words, Brian! You made my day...
My NB is bone stock underneath. I cut and installed my own decals (by comparing to screen caps from TLB), and repainted a standard set of steel rims. I've thought about chipping, etc. but decided that, since I pretty much drive the speed limit, it wouldn't be worth the money to get to 55mph two seconds faster... :)
I've had more fun with the kids at our church and around town than should be legal. I still get stopped by people who want a photo of Herbie (unfortunately, many of them think mine is the original  ).
I've used the TDI forums regularly for support whenever I've had to make repairs (which has unfortunately been more often than it should have been). This is a great resource!

When are you installing the PTO? Then you can bail hay too. :D

You laugh... I went and picked up a disc harrow today using Herbie to pull the utility trailer. ;o)

I do have a pickup truck ('69 F-100), but it gets about 8mpg. You do the math...

Last week, my wife and kids went on a 1,500 mile round trip, plus local driving when at her destination. Total fuel cost? Less then $100.00. The big tough rednecks around here look at the car with disdain, but they have trucks that can't even leave home. They want to go out, but the fuel use is too great. They want to head to the store, but the fuel use is too great. Are those macho guys using it as an excuse to hide from the world out there? :D They laugh right up until they hear it gets over 40 mpg. Then they chime in that thier diesels pickups get 20 mpg. They seem to be apologetic for their wastfulness.

It is our first choice for any driving, so long as it can carry what we need.

Better to be smart, and forward thinking than to hang on to a dying past and die with it! - Darwinian corollary?

Girlie car? I am a 'girl' - I don't think it's 'girlie', but then I frown on most things frilly, cute as an independent woman who speaks her mind, has bawl mouthed hunting dogs instead of froofroo yappers, knows how to be a handyman better then her husband does plus doesn't mind getting down and dirty when it's called for.

But then, I'm a country 'girl' that is married to a city 'boy'. :p

Diesel = power and an economically good choice. Driving a car that gets that kind of mileage with the feel of a sports car. I'll take it anyday and if you want to call it a girlie car, go ahead.

Your loss in what ya'll are missing. :D

And then again...I did finally put a TDI badge on the back of my car to keep guys from coming over to me at the gas pump.

"Lady! You're putting diesel in your car, you won't go far honey."

"Yea...well I hope to get at least 700 miles or more to the tank...honey."

Got a good chuckle LOL!:)

Yes, I get that all the time at the fillup stations. "Yo! That's diesel MAN!"

"Yeah yeah... whatever..." is my response.;)

Real men Drive Pickups! well......

Yeah, it's fun confusing the natives around here. To these guys, only pickups have deisels, and they have to have names like POWERSTROKE, DURAMAX or Heavy Duty on the trucks. JOHN DEERE is allowed too. :p

Then they start to ask about mileage, and they get very very jealous!:D

We have a sticker on the rear window:

"Don't blame me for your fuel crisis!
49 mpg since 2002! VW TDi"

I wonder what they say to the ladies at the diesel pump when you tried to SELF SERVE. "Yo, lady, that's diesel right there. You gonna mess yer car real good if yer put that in 'em..."

Who gives a crud what others think. I am 6 foot 3 inches 300 pounds and I haven't a gay thought in my brain. I drvie a 2002 new beetle everyday. My Excursion is parked at the house except when we take hunting or fishing trips. My wife drives our Jetta and I the bug. I bought my bug off of ebay and love the car. I have 5 motors running off of biodiesel. I have been pump free for almost 2 years now. My friends at the station all gave me a pile load of crap when I bought it. Then diesel went throught the roof. All of the ones who hooted and hollared asked me to make them fuel. Who is hooting now!!!! So femine car, I think not. Smart, yes!!!!

Do "real men" watch football? Musclebound men in tights sweating it out wrestling themselves to the ground? How about golfers looking at other men's legs all day? Should they also be considered "gay"?

At any rate, a portion US males seem particularly insecure about their masculinity so they don't drive a "cute" car. I guess only a pickup truck will do, and a big one at that.

Agreed... i drive a little nerdy golf. So, im not a macho pickup truck driver like some here claim are the ones who would think a NB is feminine. If you took a random street poll of 1000 people and asked them if the NB was feminine, over 90 percent would say yes. Its just a car, true. But a girly car :p
