I ordered a Golf back in october and havent heard back from the dealer so I checked back on my price quote and didnt see MDI, I asked for all options except navigation. My build sheet lists Sunroof, CW Package, Dynaudio, HID Lights, bluetooth. I was very clear that I wanted MDI, I even told the dealer that is one of the reasons I bought a IPOD touch instead of the Zune HD.
I dont see MDI on the online build section either.

Is the MDI something that comes on all of the cars with the touch screen radio?
I read about the jetta MDI that the factory system had the input in the console but the dealer installed was in the glovebox.

I want mine in the console, do I need to contact the dealer to have my order changed?

I'm not 100% on this but MDI is a VW factory option and they put the ipod cradle under the armrest. The car is assembled with the cradle under the armrest. Then there is the dealer installed optional MDI cable that will route to the glovebox. Same fuctionality, just different locations. I asked my dealer if i could get the MDI in the console, and he said they can't retrofit the console after the car is made. It's possible that they could do the console but don't want to.

My TDI came without the MDI Cable. It was installed by the dealer after I requested it. Since it was dealer installed, it sits in the glove box rather then in the center console.

Are you referring to the TDI sedans? According to the sticker on the JSW TDI that I picked up a month ago, the factory MDI adapter was an extra-cost option. Nor were the Porto wheels standard; it came with 16" Biolines. The description of the dealer added iPod adapter as being located in the glove box and the factory installed iPod adapter being located in the console is the way I've understood it.
FWIW, VW offers an accessory USB cable that will allow the iPod interface to instead connect to and power some USB hard drives. I'm using this cable to access music files on a 320GB USB hard disk using the radio and steering wheel controls. The 2010 version of the iPod adapter isn't just for iPods. YMMV with particular model hard drives as to whether they get sufficient power over the USB bus to run, so you might want to do some testing before buying a USB drive just for this purpose. Wish VW made the capabilities and limitations of the iPod/bluetooth systems a little more clear. You shouldn't have to figure this out *after* getting the car.

It is my understanding that the Golf TDI (2/4 door) have a different standard option package than the JSW's do.

MDI came standard in my Golf TDI. It would of been so much more useful if it was an actual USB plug instead of that proprietary crap.

The MDI that sits in your armrest is standard on the Golf TDI and is assembled at the factory.

The MDI that goes through the glovebox is an option for the Jetta and JSW TDI that can be done by the dealer with the least cost/invasive surgery on your car. You can have the console connection retrofitted, but it is insanely expensive, since you will need a new console assembly.

on the Golf, it is wrong... You need the MDI option ($199) to get the MDI in the centre console. This is also the case with the GTI. I saw a 2dr TDI Golf at the dealers without MDI, which means it is an optional extra

No, it is not. I don't know why you saw one without, but they come with it and there is nothing on the invoice regarding a charge for it.

I test drove about 5 different TDIs this weekend (JSW, Sedans, and the GOLF), they ALL had the iPod MDI cable. Does anyone have a USB one?

My JSW TDI came with the cable that terminates in the iPod adapter. I purchased an accessory cable that connects to the MDI adapter and terminates in a USB Mini-B Male connector. See http://www.vwdiscountparts.com/part...tegoryID=155007&subcat1=155129&subcat2=155131. It works great with some USB drives, but not all that I've tried. On the drives that get sufficient power form the USB bus to spin up, the media player navigates on the hard drive connected to the USB just like it does on an iPod connected to the MDI to iPod cable.

What if you plug in a WinMo phone?
Depends on the phone. Phones with Windows Mobile 6 or 6.5 may work if you set the USB to PC connection to look like a thumb drive rather than an ActiveSync connection.
