I am at 71,400 miles, still original turbo,. Am I alone? If not, how many miles on your car and is it tuned?

Bone stock, 159xxx miles, original turbo (unless they replaced it as part of dieselgate fix at 54xxx miles).

Expecting failure any day now 😢

Still driving on original turbo that the car left the factory with. Only 92k miles right now though.

Will be looking to delete/tune in coming months, and probably will look more for an Eco tune rather than a big power increase. Now if the stock turbo does go, I believe there are beefier aftermarket upgrades for replacement that would then warrant a nice stage 2 tune.

Even the "stock" OEM BW units were improved. The most obvious thing they changed was the compressor wheel. But I have been told they changed the size of the oil drain to improve the hot flow out of the center section.

141K, everything stock. Bought it with just under 50K, and there was nothing in the Carfax to suggest the turbo had been replaced.

My son borrowed my car a few months ago while his is down, original turbo with about 249k miles, tuned for approximately 5k miles. Take it easy until the car is warmed up and take it easy the last few miles then cool the turbo. ScanGage helps, don't interupt regens.

Yep, still going strong - just over 435k miles.
435k miles on original turbo? I assume original engine too? Sounds unbelieveable.

Did you check for turbo shaft play? Is there any?

Also, what are the conditions the car runs? City driving (is this some kind of Taxi?), highway? How many % of run time is idle time? What are your OCIs and what oil do you use (I know this is religious question but still)?

Thanks

Henrick, remember our geography is vastly different than yours... we can pile miles on our cars very quickly because we are often able to drive long distances at higher speeds without interruption. I put ~100 miles a day on a car just going to and from my job, much of it at 80+ MPH. The midwest USA is HUGE. The single state I live in, Missouri, is over twice the size of your entire country.... and it's just a middle sized state.

We also have a really, really, (REALLY), pathetic passenger rail system between cities. So that is rarely a choice for folks here. Cars are king.

Original engine, turbo, HPFP - only the DPF and the DMF have been changed, both at around 300k miles.
DPF was not clogged, but regens were every day. Oil Ash Volume was at 98g by VCDS.
My commute to work and back is 180mi per day, so the miles rack up. 75% 55mph and 25% at 70mph.
I do get stuck in traffic every afternoon for 30+ minutes to go the first 3 miles, the usual bumper to bumper stop and go.
I use Pennzoil Euro L 5w-30 - Walmart for $26 5-quart jug, been using since the first oil change at the dealer. Change every 5k miles.

So much of Drivbiwire's theory that 5w-30 oil and/or short OCIs will destroy your engine... NOT. Oil and additives have changed dramatically during past few decades.

If I am not mistaken, Pennzoil is Shell's regional brand name in the States.

BTW, I found this quote on Amazon listing for that oil:

  • Helps extend engine life and protects for up to 15 years or 500,000 miles, whichever comes first. Guaranteed* (see Warranty Information in Product Description).
I guess the statement is confirmed and you're eligible for that guarantee :)

Overall, interesting information, thanks for sharing.

And when I changed the hex shaft that drives the oil pump I could just barley see a rounding of the edges after 395k miles.

Pennzoil is just one of Shell's motor oil product lines in N. America. There's also Rotella and Quaker State. The Pennzoil line of GTL lubricants are quite excellent.

Also not applicable to the thread.... 2015 is a different engine, with an entirely different turbocharger....
Did the OP state gen2 2012-2014 CRKA turbos only?

Our 2015 is still on its original turbo 108K on the clock. Malone tuned for 105K miles.

Just to toss on some more data points. Our Alltrack is on an original turbo, not its original turbo, a 2015 GTI's original IS20 turbo, and it is on it's 2nd wastegate actuator. I've spent more on actuators than i did on the used turbo.

The Alltracks IS12 wastegate actuator failed around 80K, only 20k once it was tuned, those gasser actuators or turning of actuators is finicky at best. I would swap a new actuator on that is12 and i'm sure it'll work with no issues.

I assumed since this is the NMS section, he has a CKRA Passat, and those are the well-known troublesome ones. If I assumed wrong, I apologize, and then it opens up the doors for everyone and their brother to comment on any turbochargers I guess. I could tell some stories about the Chevy Trax and its crappy 1.4L turbo engine and how many cracked in half turbochargers I've seen on those miserable things.

I was reading the other turbo thread (specifically for Passat NMS vehicles and, if I read correctly, Volkswagen was aware of this issue in early 2013. So I would assume anything that came out later that year for the 2014 models would have came with an upgraded turbo?

Some of the mileage being reported here is insane for an original turbo.

I was concerned but now, not really.

Nope, 2012-2014 use the same part #. Even the Reman turbo I got from the dealer only lasted 16k miles.

Well, I’m just going to drive it until it blows up. Right now I’m more concerned about the HPFP. Next purchase is going to be the disaster plate, but I know this thread is about turbos.

Seems to me that when the turbo goes, it doesn’t destroy everything else like the CP4.

I found an aftermarket turbo and I was going to post it here but I’ve lost it. It was a Canadian. Company. Maybe it was Performance Turbos? Anyone heard of them?
