Is a catalyst and dpf the same?

Hey guys sorry bout my stupid question, I been having this problem with my car where after I got my car back from vw it has this problem where sometimes it don’t let me go past 80 and will come down slowly and not go back up. So last year I found out the emission issue and I had vw fix the emission problem and recall, after I got my car the car started giving me the dpf light then a few months after I started losing power like I mentioned and it would show the glow plug light after researching I found out I had extended warranty and that I am not the only one it happened to, eventually I took the car back and they replaced the turbo along with the “dpf that they are calling catalyst” now it’s been almost a year I haven’t driven much cuz I had oil leaks that I had to fix but I noticed after driving I still have the problem I took it to a shop and they checked everything on the car and are saying everything is good but they noticed the dpf was clogged up, now my car got like 215k but vw gave it back at 208000 so I don’t know, they were supposed to change the dpf and she is saying that they did change the “catalyst” and it says so on the paperwork too it says they changed the dpf! so I don’t know I’m trying to gather up info and evidence because vw is a pain to work with just last time they wanted me to pay the whole labor and parts I had to get vw cares involved anyways is it the same thing? Is there like a diagram where I can show this lady how dpf and catalyst are part of the picture but not the same? Cuz now I have to fight to get them to replace my dpf. There are just too many to list....
There are actually several parts, and the DPF (Diesel Particle Filter) does have a catalyst inside of it, the exhaust exits the turbocharger, goes into the cat/DPF assembly, then comes out, and passes by the DEF injector and then goes into a deNox catalyst.

The piece with the DPF is actually just called "exhaust pipe with catalyst", and the original part number is 561-253-053-A, and the deNox catalyst assembly is just called "catalyst" and actually has two parts as well, that original part number is 561-254-400-A. Both those part numbers may have been updated post-Dieselgate.

hi thank you for the info yes that 561253053a part was what the service manager said they replaced but the car shop said it looks clogged up like it was never changed she tried to say I ran it and I clogged it cuz I do drive alot like 10k a month and a half lol but I barely only drove it about 15k if not less since December that I got my car back, so honestly I don’t know how to fight them on this one seeing as last time she tried to charge me for the whole turbo and dpf replacement until I got vw care involved. I even went back after because my car had the issue that it has now that won’t let me go past 80 sometimes and idles down For like 20 miles and then works again for a while but they said that it was nothing they did but the shop said The car is otherwise great and that it seems To be either a software issue or the dpf that looks clogged up. My car been at the shop since aug 6 they been tryna do all these tests on it charging me 95 and hour if this comes out to be the dpf I’m gonna be so upset -_- thank you btw

Should still have extended warranty for some time after the emissions fix. Go check the warranty paperwork. If covered they are on the hook to fix it no matter what.

Thanks I do have the paperwork for the extended warranty I had to get it because the service manager was trying to make me pay 10k for job and then 4K for labor after I sent her the paperwork I had to get vw cares involved too

Just keep pursuing it and know what the warranty covers inside and out. Take a copy with you. Get VW cares involved too. Failing those call the CA attorneys and discuss with them. You can always try another dealer or request they tow it to another one. Get them to send a specialist out from VW. If you let them get away with it it makes it harder on you and everyone else the next time. Good luck and keep us informed! I keep a printed copy of the warranty and the court docs as well in the car.

thank you I will try to fight with them again who is the CA attorney? I don’t have any info on anything I do have the warranty papers printed but I didn’t even find out about the emission scandal until January2019 I hadjust missed the deadline to get some cash for it :( will definitely keep posted seeing as I may need more advice. I was told by the shop that if they can’t replace it I’m better off doing the dpf delete and really that’s a lot of money sigh. Thank you so much for all the info

I also agree with Lightflyer1, you have to start getting VW care involved and have to put up a bit of a fight. They know warranty work doesn't make them money, they're trying to squeeze you. Vast majority of dealerships in north America only care if it involves money. Sad part of ownership here
Ugh I am just waiting on my shop mechanic to call me back and like verify with me the dpf is bad so I can call vw and start a claim and fight.
This is just like the time they told me all my motor mount bolts were on and there and my engine fell out.......... I hate the volkwagen dealership but I do love my car

Don't make it a fight. Know your position and stick to the terms of the warranty. A calm yet firm approach. Getting anyone angry or mad will just hinder your goal. You should have the car at VW not your shop. They could care less about your shops opinion.

They are fixing my other oil leak n coolant leak and was trying to find the source of the bad performance issue so as soon as I have my car out n ready I will start with vws issue it’s not like I could’ve gone to vw and say my issue cuz they wouldn’t have told me since I have gone for same issue before so I’m kinda glad the shop found out

Maybe not a fight, but you must be persistent. Pretty sure the dealer gets paid from VW for that type work.

So it turns out dpf/catalyst is new but for some reason the car is giving codes saying the catalyst is clogged and maybe it’s from a software so pretty much if vw don’t wanna do a software fix he said my best bet is to do dpf delete on it do you guys have any idea of where I can get a kit and tuner and is that all I’ll need? I saw this one site but it had so many options and I have no clue

Sorry guys are correct, fight is not the word I should be using, although sometimes it feels like a passive aggressive version of it when having work with dealerships. persistent is correct.
I never really fought fought I have been persistent, I also apologized and told her how the mechanic checked the dpf and catalyst and told her it was in fact changed but for some reason the computer is giving a code saying catalyst is full or something like that so I told her I was gonna take them the car eventually when I get it back to see if they can fix the code and do a software update cuz I saw something online that said other ppl had the issue too but she never said anything....
