Hi guys, Yes I'm a newb, but stumbled upon this thread looking for bluetooth info. My Jetta TDI was built in sept. I have the premium 8 (touchscreen-non-nav) and I wanted the ipod docking station (btw, its a $500.00 option on the 2010). Well, the techs said they couldn't make it work without me losing my satellite radio option? I didn't ask why because of all the technical jargon..I said forget it and they gave me the $ back...I understand the ipod input in the console is better anyway for holding more music. The nav option uploads your whole library (up to 20gig)
Also interesting is that the SD card input only reads up to 2 gig...
Just some info for you folks..
I'm going to buy an ipod today and try this thing out!

Oh thats a good thing, I will make sure to tell them to read those instructions. =) Oh and btw tomo can you tell us once you get this part installed so we can see how it works? Thanks.

Gitbox I think they are taking about a different part than what was taked about above. As far as I know you will not loose satellite radio with the 5N0 057 342. I dont believe the ipod input in the console is any better than the one I just mentioned. As far as the SD card I purchased a 16 gig and it worked fine. I have way to many songs for the radio to fathom so I had to separate them into artist folders and it was just too big of a hassle to do this. iPod integration will be much easier once installed.

iPod Touch sound quality

I'm the proud new owner of a 2010 Jetta TDI, Platinum grey metallic, 6-speed manual, sunroof, 17-inch goal wheels. Awesome machine! Haven't had a VW diesel since the old Dasher wagon diesel. The Premium 8 radio sounds great with FM/AM/Satellite. I got a new 36GB iPod touch to plug into the MDI. I've notice the vocals sound fuzzy. Very disappointing! I've tried adjusting the treble, bass, and mid range without much improvements. Anyone encounter this problem? Any fixes?

According to the manual(for the radio), it can take a 32 gig card(may have to be an SDHC card...can't remember). BUT, the number of files/folders is limited(forget exact numbers, but it's in the radio manual). No way you can fit 32 gigs worth of music within the file/folder limit unfortunately :((or even really on the 16 gig), unless you put whole albums on the card(as one track for each album).

I have a 16 gig card in now(SDHC) and a case with a few 8 gig cards. The 8 gigs can be stuffed without worrying about the file/folder limit. :)

I got the iPod kit on my '10 JSW. The interface is kind of clunky, and it eats up the center console storage.

In retrospect, I'd have just toughed it out with the Aux input.

Ok, I got my retro fit kit in my hands now, the instructions are NOT model specific, I suppose they expect whoever gets this kit to have the model's service manual, which I don't have, has anyone here added this in to their 09/10 JSW? Where do I start on getting panels off the front console and getting access to the RCD-510 radio?
Thanks!

Ok so tomo what do you mean exactly by "the interface is kind of clunky"? And I guess that means you didn't go with the on that just goes in the glove box? How is the sound quality and can you control everything easily from the radio? Thanks

I just did this today on my 2010 jsw. The panel around the radio is the only one I had to remove. You can slide the new control unit behind the climate contol area without removing the panel.

The absolutely hardest part of the install for me was removing the wires to move them to the new harness. I don't have a tool and used a paperclip. It turned a job that would have taken about 45 minutes into 3 hours. But it works now!

tom365 is not tomo366........The factory installed MDI interface comes installed in the Console.........so you lose at least half of the console to what ever device you have connected to it! It is controlled through the radio........I haven't heard one yet so I don't know the sound quality!
I ordered the Factory add on unit with my car and it was out of stock so I haven't received it yet........

As far as extracting and connecting wires.......I have purchased a Kufatec wiring harness that makes my kit Plug N Play!!

Did you have to recode??

Awesome! Glad it went well for you. I do have to ask: where/how did you start in getting the panel around the radio off? Is there a good place to start?

Thanks!

Yes. I had to recode the can controller to tell it that there was a "media3" controller installed and I had to set the media3 option in the radio controller. Sorry, I didn't take pics, but it was pretty obvious in vag-com.

I pried up the bottom corner of the trim piece around the radio and just worked from there. It's held on with clips all around.

My bad tomo366 I wasnt paying attention.

So then aenea, how is the sound quality for the integration?

When yall say you have to recode, can anyone do this or do you have to use a special tool? If so where or how do you get one?

Ok thanks, so is this VAG-COM really hard to use? I mean do you have to be a professional to use it? What all can you do with it?

OK, I suppose this was for me.

The radio interface is "clunky" in the sense that it's very slow to update when paging through the iPod selections. The connection is in the center console (arm rest), where it takes up about half of the available space; I still haven't figured out what the other half is supposed to be used for.

As for sound quality, it's pretty good.

Ipod Playlist Question

Hi - I just got my MkVI TDI yesterday and am all-around delighted but I do have one question, which I can't seem to find an answer in the owner's manual, and two different sales folks at the distributor couldn't help.

How do I make the radio screen (non-navi version) display my ipod playlists? All I get is a list of songs, alphabetized by artist, and then by song.

I've got some driving playlists that I really like, and I can't figure out how to get at 'em.

Am I missing something?

Thanks!

Does your car have the Factory MDI ?? If you are plugging inthrough the AUX you won't get any Playlists.......

Also you car is a MK5 not a MK6.

Huh? I thought 2010 Golf was MkVI. ???

In other news, I figured out a semi-workaround to get at playlists.

1) Turn on music system.
2) Turn on ipod
3) Select desired playlist in ipod. Connect to interface cable immediately.
4) Scroll through playlist as desired.

If wishing to go to a new playlist, disconnect ipod from connector cable, select a new playlist, and then repeat steps 3 and 4.

iPod Touch sound quality

I had trouble with poor sound quality with my iPod Touch 32 GB. The vocals sounded "fuzzy" in spite of altering the bass/treble. I was actually able to fix the problem by going to "Settings" and selecting "Factory settings". The sound quality has been perfect since. I still get an occasional drop out of sound at the beginning of songs. Advancing through the song library is a bit slow, also. I agree with the other comments that the interface is a bit clunky, but I am glad to have the MDI overall.:)

Check that your Ipod is in Airplane mode, that cuts down on the background fuzz.

When looking at the alphabetized list touch the icon in the upper left of the screen and you can sort by different things including "playlist".

I finally got the OEM adapter installed this week in my '10. It works and gives you full control over the playlists, songs, albums, whatever. It adds an MFI cable to the non-nav radio and pretty much works as expected. The AUX-in option is gone with the adapter installed.
It does seem a little buggy; a few times the MEDIA-IN option went offline if I pressed the buttons faster than it processed input. But otherwise it works and the sound quality is fine.

No charging support for iPhones of course.

i had an iphone 3gs for a week (yay at&t and their crappy coverage, i'll pay verizon for a phone that works, thank you very much) and it charged fine through the factory MDI cable. Of course it said the MDI wasn't supported device i just clicked okay and it worked great.
