Steve: Input volumes are all set to Medium. I don't think any of these would turn down ringer volume on the iPhone. And, if so, how would this affect the iPhone ringer when away from the car?

Maybe you were addressing the playback volume issue. This issue is inconsistent. Usually the volume is fine, but 20% of the time playback volume is extremely low.

I fault Apple for these issues, not VW, or my ineptness with electronics.

Open for other suggestions ...

Thanks,
James
James,
Didn't mean to imply you were inept with electronics. The various volume menus are hidden and even with my familiarity with electronics I never thought to check those menus. Yes, I was referring to playback volumes.

The only other thing to check (you may have done so already) is to see what your speed-sensitive volume is set at - since you say this only occurs 20% of the time, although it should be consistent if the SSV setting is off. Again this would be to address the playback volume issue.

That's all I can come up with for now but I have noticed strangeness in other areas on the 315 since I upgraded to iOS 5. Probably a combination of Apple and VW's head unit programming. Checking with VW (before iOS 5) I had the most recent update to my MMI.

I currently am experiencing issues with the head unit either not displaying titles of music playing off the iPhone or displaying one title but playing another song. For now I moved to a SD card and don't even integrate into the MMI.

Steve:

Appreciate your help. My inept comment arose due to my frustration with Apple, and I didn't think you were slamming me.

Speed sensitive volume is turned off.

There are many frustrated people on the Apple support forum driving GM, Cadillac, Chevy, Volvo, BMW. So my frustration is aimed at Apple.

I am very frustrated, but have fallen in love with bluetooth for the phone, so will continue to deal with it's issues until fixed.

My 4S has been pretty good in my Golf so far, although it has it's issue. It pairs fine, but randomly it will loose connectivity with the BT even though it says it's connected. You'll know it because if you recieve a call or try to make one using the steering wheel controls, it either doesn't ring, (because the BT is sync-ed), or it says that the call failed. Most of the time just turning off BT on the phone and turning it back on will reset the connection, sometimes it doesn't though and you just have to turn the car off. I also can't listen to music through the MDI cable and have it sync'd to make calls through the BT, it's either one or the other. Most of the time I just play music VIA BT and that way I can still receive calls. My 4S has been a whole lot better than my Android was though. I'd make one call on my Android and then it would "dirty" the connection, meaning basically it would show as connected but it wouldn't function through the BT. I still by another 4/4S, it's been a great phone.

I went ahead and jumped on the iPhone 4s bandwagon. So far it's not bad. I can sync with the BT phone and play music through the mdi just fine.

I have trouble with the interaction of the two though. Ive found that if I plug the phone into the cable before the BT connects the phone automatically switches to playing music through BT, even if i have BT audio turned off on the stereo. I have to go into Music on the phone and select the dock connector to resume play through the mdi. I find it exceptionally annoying to have to fumble around with a $300 phone due to the lack of a default setting.

Does anyone know of a fix (an app perhaps) for this?
