Instrument Cluster Swap, now Power Steering doesn't work

Hello, maybe someone can help me out.
I bought an Instrument Cluster on Ebay from an European 2006 Jetta TDI, same production year as my Jetta TDI, because I wanted to replace the MFD, because mine has a faulty display - it displays only 50% left side, right side is dark. I took it apart and sprayed the contacts with an electric cleaner, but it didn't help, so I bought a whole used Instrument Cluster. When the part arrived I realized it's a bit different type of display - it's divided into two parts, with the upper part showing the massages (like refuel, or replenish the windshield fluid etc.), and the lower Part with the MFD display.
So I wasn't able to swap the display, but I wanted to try what happens when I put the whole thing in and of course it cut off the engine right away, because of the anti-theft function, which I wasn't really aware of. So I put back the original Instrument Cluster in and engine starts, but power steering stopped working and yellow solid warning light - power steering assist reduced and ESP/ASR (Electronic Stabilization Program/Anti-Slip Regulation) warning lights are on.

How can I correct this, is the entire electronics messed up now, please help!
Thank you for any input.

There are just too many to list....
OBD works, start there. You may have to reinitialize the CAN Gateway again to pair up all the modules. Or at least see what DTCs exist with the Steering.

Thank you Oilhammer. I have the Ross-Tech Software, but I still need to get the HEX(?) cable for it.
I drove today and the warning lights stay on-most importantly the yellow reduced steering assist warning light - saddest thing is, power steering doesn't work, after I make a 90 degrees turn the wheels do not straighten up like they supposed to, and I have to really work the steering wheel in order to bring the vehicle out of the turn.
I went today to a local shop, and they guy asked me, whether I took off the steering wheel to put in the other instrument cluster, which of course did not work with my car keys, which I wasn't aware of, and I said no, because you don't need to remove it in order to have access to take it out or put it in. And then he said, because if I did, that in the steering wheel there is some sort of a calibrating device or some disc, which he said, when moved, causes problems for the electronics, because they get a bad read. But I just lowered and pulled the steering wheel in order to access - that's all.
Can you tell me where I can find Info about reinitilizing the CAN gateway? Would that possibly solve the power steering problem?
Thank you.

Hi, I ordered the HEX V2 cable and it's on its way. Power steering still out of order, yellow light comes on every time I start the engine. I noticed that on the MFD I have info about a shop service in so-and-so-many miles, which must come from the other instrument cluster, and my original messages like for example the 'Service Now!' message is gone. So messages got swapped, too. Do you know Oilhammer where these messages get stored in, because thinking logically it must be somewhere outside of the instrument cluster, and that's probably where the problem with the power steering lies. Thanks.

What LCD you have 2 connectors or only one?

Every time you install different cluster in your car VIN is different and it will reset your ABS configuration , so you have to re adopt sensors .
For hard steering you can do it with out scan tool , but for rest of them you need to have VCDS .
This is how you reset hard steering called Steering Limit Stop Adaptation

(Engine still running)

  • Center steering wheel (±10°) and hold it centered for 5 seconds.
  • Turn steering wheel completely to the left and hold it there for 10 seconds.
  • Turn steering wheel completely to the right and hold it there for 10 seconds.
  • Center steering wheel (±10°).
  • Switch OFF engine and ignition.
  • Switch ON ignition.
  • Wait 5 seconds.
  • Steering Assist Warning Lamp should turn OFF. If it doesn't, perform a short test drive.
When you get VCDS look here for rest of the sensors :

Thank you very much for your input Jetta97, I'm still waiting for the VCDS cable. I tried the steering limit stop adaptation, but it did not help to restore power steering, and yellow light is still on permanently. As I explained above, the worst thing is to get out of a turn, I have to really work the steering wheel in order to straighten out the wheels, whereas they used to go back effortlessly by itself.

As for ABS, you wrote to look on Ross Tech. I have a 2006 VW Jetta TDI 1.9, so according to the info -- +0004096 = 1.9l TDI PD / 2.0l FSI / 2.0l SDI PD & All with Automatic Transmission -- this would be the value. Do I have to type it in manually in VCDS?
The monochrome (orange) MFD LCD which I wanted to replace originally has two ribbon cables on each side like you find those on a notebook computer. There is no access to it, b/c the speedometer and rpm-meter faces are in the way, so I would have to take off those and their hands first, and then there is this metal housing where the actual LCD sits in, which can be removed by bending its metal snap-hooks from the other side of the PCB board I believe, at least that's what I saw on youtube. Would you happen to know the part number for this LCD or where I can find it?
Thank you.

You do not need to mess with Coding, you just need to re-adopt Sensors .
2 connector LCD is very had to find, I will try to see can I find one . They are not sold anywhere online , but they not cheap as well.
You may consider updating to Mk6 cluster . I can do that for you . Look video in my Signature Mk5 with Mk6 cluster.

Thank you Jetta 97. I don't think you will be able to help personally, because right now I am in Europe, Germany, and here I don't know anybody who could help me out, except to go to the dealer, and that would be very costly and wouldn't make sense for my 15 year old Jetta.
Ok, so for power steering and everything to go back to normal I have to re-adapt sensors with VCDS?
When I start my VCDS I see the following overview, so I test the port, save it and where do I go next to do that? Thank you.

And here are the pictures of my MFD where the right side is dark, almost gone. I haven't made the attempt to take it apart to clean the ribbon connectors, maybe this would do the trick? The only thing I am scared of is taking the whole thing apart, taking off the gauges, hands etc...
Cheers :)

From the pictures you are almost there, no need to mess with the gauges and hands. The screen frame will come off, and then remove the screen with the little ribbon cables on both sides. Clean the connectors or replace the entire screen (I replaced the screen from a junkyard found screen)

Not On this Early stile , This has Metal around it which is clipped at back and Front Board needs to be removed to replace LCD.

After you do TEST make sure you have CAN and KLine OK. If OK , then SAVE . then go to 03 -ABS and follow link I posted Above

Check you PM for LCD.

I finally got the cable and below is the report from VCDS...

So first I re-adopt the three ABS sensors - that's where VCDS noticed 3 errors:

01435 - Brake Pressure Sensor 1 (G201)
005 - No or Incorrect Basic Setting / Adaptation
01423 - Lateral Acceleration Sensor (G200)
005 - No or Incorrect Basic Setting / Adaptation
00778 - Steering Angle Sensor (G85)
005 - No or Incorrect Basic Setting / Adaptation

and after that I would try again the steering limit stop adaptation?

02546 - Steering Limit Stop
005 - No or Incorrect Basic Setting / Adaptation
