Well... last weekend at the Berlin, MD GTG I tried out RocketChip stage 2. There was a bunch more power, but my clutch was slipping /images/graemlins/eek.gif. So, I had it flashed back to stock.

Today, I bought a PSI powerbox. I am pleased with the additional power. It's not as much as the RocketChip, since it's not fooling with the turbo... but there is a nice, smooth increase in power. I took my brother for a ride (he's got a 2003 GOlf TDI, too), and he was pleased, as well.

Anyway... other than that, I'm stock as far as performance. I just haven't seen a post about the PSI box for a while, so I thought I'd represent for it! Anyway... for the money, ease of intallation, and the ability to remove it quickly (for warranty work), I think it's a great deal! Oh, BTW, I picked it up at Impex for $250.

Okay... Jeff was right...

There does seem to be a little clutch slippage with the box. Not nearly as much as with the RocketChip2. If I punch it at 2,000 RPM, it will shoot up to about 2,200 or 2,300 RPM. With the RocketChip, it wanted to go to 2,600 or so.

Still, I am very pleased with how smooth the power comes on. It does not feel "aftermarket". It feels like the extra power is supposed to be there.

McBrew, I am very interested in this box. Was it as easy to install as plugging the thing inline with the Injector pump? I have been reading tuning box threads and people mention about a wire that goes to the MAF. Does this have an extra wire? I have the spec in front of me and it rates the power and torque in metric (KW and Nm). I see here for the Bora 1,9 it increases power to 81KW and torque to 240Nm. Do you happen to know the convertions to HP/Ft.Lb tq.

Oh yeah, have you got any wierd CEL's or hesitation?

thanks

The numbers you posted would be about 108 HP (US) and 177 lb/ft of torque.

Yes, installation was a breeze. I did it in a parking lot. The only tool you need is a 10mm nut driver to remove the engine cover, if you've still got one! I recommend doing it with the engine cool, because you'll be fiddling around right by the oil filter housing... and it's HOT! Right behind the oil filter, you'll see a big plug in the wiring harness that goes to the injection pump. Pull it up and out of the bracket, squeeze the clip and unplug it. The PSI box has the same plugs on it. You just plug them in and set the box over behind the MAF. I wrapped it in a cloth to keep it from rattling around. Put the engine cover back on, start it up, and go!

I chose this box because there's no MAF connection. Those type of boxes may be able to squeeze out a bit more power, but I don't like the idea of fooling with the MAF wiring. That makes this box a bit easier to remove, too. The plugs it uses are actual VW parts... so they are a good fit and they have the o-rings in them to seal out moisture.

I've been happy with my PSI powerbox after I put it in last month, it really 'woke up' the car (auto tranny)...I'm pretty much used to it now and find myself wanting even more power now from time to time...the sickness...

as far as placement, you may want to tuck in the box in the little space on the left side of the battery underneath the battery cover. it's a bit more snug & secure and less chance of flopping around the engine bay.

ujaku, thanks for the tip... I'll take a good look under there when this rain stops. The box is really a nice addition.

Anyone planning on being at the Impex-fest, they are raffling off a PSI box this year. They've got plenty of them... heck, they may even let you try one out before buying. It's worth it!

Hey Jesse and others,

I was at ImpexFest3 yesterday, entered the raffle, and guess what? I won the powerbox!!!! /images/graemlins/grin.gif /images/graemlins/grin.gif /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I put it in my friends car last night and it works wonders, but it made the glow plug light flash. I am going to try it in Shannon's car this afternoon before she heads out for her show. I'll see if it has the same symptoms.

Time to go have fun.

Thanks,
mikey

This PSI Powerbox, can be plugged on European Volkswagen Golf with 110 HP? Because my friend wants to buy a box like mine or different brand, but I don't know if these boxes can be used on 110HP volkswagen, that's why I'm afraid to try my box on is car. What do you think? I even know a person who wants to sell his Tuningbox, but we don't know if his box will work on my friend's car because is already 110 HP>

Mikey,

Congrats on the raffle! I haven't had any trouble with glowplug light or CEL... and my clutch slippage has gone away... probably to return with colder weather /images/graemlins/crazy.gif. After spending 8 days on a sailboat, it was really a blast to come back to my Golf and my tuning box!

ok call me stupid (if ya want) I'm a little new to this (been reading a lot) Do you need a chip to use the PSI box? Or can you run just the PSI Box, or can you run the PSI Box and A chip?

Very carefully......
The Tuning Box Alters the signal from the ECU into the Fuel Pump (Read adds more fuel) And the engine is not running so you get a Cel N-146 Fueling upper level reached no big deal I just reset and go

Jesse,

No more CEL's or lights to speak of...but the box won't stay in the car. Shannon refuses to drive the car with it in. It kinda sucks.

the gray wire in the wiring of the PSI tuning box can be used to switch it on and off. so you dont have to remove it just turn flip the switch

Tom, what CEL(s) are you getting from the box? Just curious. I haven't gotten any CELs since installing the box... and I did stall the car out the other day /images/graemlins/blush.gif. Taking off quickly from a stop is a bit different than pre-powerbox... I forgot about that after 8 days away from my car.

This "toy" works with the 10-pin injection pumps.

Does this mean that it only works with the MK4 TDI's w/ the non-PD motors? (i.e. 99.5 - 03 Jetta's, Golfs, and NB's).
