Inserting Diesel Nozzle

I went to 3 gas stations today. I believe these were exxon, valero, etc... typical car gas stations. At the first gas station (in round rock TX) I could not fit the diesel nozzle into the hole.
Second gas station (south of Austin TX) again I could not fit the diesel nozzle in the hole, but it did sort of lock in place and I was able to fill up. I had to hold the nozzle in place the entire time I pumped, the fuel pumped extremely slow, and when it was full... it overflowed and I felt kinda silly.
Once I had a full tank I stopped in San Antonio to try a third gas station just to see if it would fit. It did not.

I went to the dealership and looked at another TDI diesel receiver (hole) and it looked basically the exact same as mine.
Dealerhips say they've never heard of this happening.
Initially I was thinking they installed a gas receiver on my golf TDI. But after comparing the two cars I don't think so.

So, any thoughts, suggestions, heard about this before?

AGAIN, I went to 3 typical car gas stations. I did not go to a trucker station.

It does not go in in all the way. The springs that surround the nozzle stop at the 3 little Fingers that come from the top of the hole. Nozzles around me will kind of balance there but I dont trust it. I fill at Wide open til the first Click. Then wait a little bit and do the top off. I always fill til I can see the fuel in the hole. Mainly so I know im stopping at the same level each time to get as exact as I can with the MPG number.

There are three different diesel nozzles and it sounds like you have been finding the larger ones. Ask the stations you are going to for the small diesel nozzle for cars.

The larger nozzles are typically used on the high speed pumps for filling big trucks. If you stop at truck stops and use the lanes for the big trucks you will typically get those.

If the truck stop is busy, you'll have pissed off truckers waiting on you to fit that big hose in your little car. LOL! :)

Like it was said above, (on mine) it doesn't go all the way in like in my gas vehicle. Try turning the nozzle about 1/4 - 1/2 turn to see if that works. Or you could get one of those funnels made for these. I believe BMW makes them cheapest.

Try the other side of the pump. Each fuel pump has two hoses/nozzles. One side of the pump is usually the bigger nozzle for trucks and the other side is a smaller nozzle for filling cars.

Sometimes the station posts a sign above the pumps with a truck and an arrow pointing to one lane and a car and an arrow pointing to the other.

Stupid Question #132

My '03 Jetta TDI had the big hole. Didn't matter whether I used the truck lanes or the car diesel pump.
Now, I've noticed the same issue on my new '11. So, you're driving in the middle of nowhere and you need to fuel up. The one station has only truck sized nozzles. Is there a way one can fill up with the big nozzle?

In over 20+ years of driving diesel passenger vehicles I've never, ever had to use a truck sized nozzle when fueling up.

My first stop for fuel was at a combo truck auto stop. I pulled up and damn that nozzle was big. I looked at 4 pumps. All the same. Then I hear a voice from the sky. Pump 5. Thankfully the diesel gods took mercy on me. I went inside afterwards and the guys said "first timer huh, happens to newbies all the time". I just got the adapter since we vacation and travel in some remote places. Had no idea what I'd run into on some trip and I paid 11 with shipping. Peace of mind.

I've had no problems with any of the PetroCanada or Husky stations I've used, perhaps because percentage-wise there are more diesel cars up here in Canada?
